Steven R. Staples
Steven R. Staples is a former Virginia superintendent of public instruction. He was appointed on March 31, 2014, by Governor Terry McAuliffe and served until December 31, 2017.[1]
Biography
Staples has worked as a teacher, principal and district superintendent over 31 years in public education. He served as the executive director of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents from 2012 to 2014. Staples also taught education courses at the College of William & Mary from 2008 to 2012.[2]

Staples assumed the statewide office of Virginia superintendent of public instruction on May 1, 2014. In his capacity as superintendent, Staples was the chief education officer of the commonwealth and served as secretary of the Board of Education.[3]
