Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Specht's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • The Right to Bear Arms: As a responsible gun owner, I am the best candidate to preserve the right to bear arms. I do not support arbitrary laws and bans, but I support common-sense legislation that will reduce gun-related suicides, and access to firearms by criminals, terrorists, and the mentally unfit.
  • Abortion: While my faith makes me personally opposed to terminating life, as a constitutional lawyer, I will not waste valuable taxpayer money in support of legislation which is doomed to be struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States. The best way to prevent abortion is to concentrate on efforts that respect a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions while promoting pathways to better alternatives than abortion. We do this by improving access to adoption, developing comprehensive Family Life Planning in our public school systems, and revising family leave policies.
  • National Security: As a veteran who has made sacrifices for his country, I want Congress to assert its constitutional duties to check the power of the executive branch. Before authorizing the use of troops, Congress must ensure there is a clearly defined national interest, a clearly articulated goal, and clear steps to pursue that goal. I will not support wars of choice that go on without end.
  • Veterans Affairs: As a veteran with a family of veterans and numerous veteran friends, I am best suited to understand the needs of our veterans and to assert changes which need to be made. We must improve access to care and flip the burden of proof in establishing whether injuries are service related.
  • Social Security: The United States government made a promise to people. Work hard, pay into the system, and the system will help take care of you in old age. We must keep that promise and protect those who have relied on that promise. Social Security can be fixed without threatening our parents and grandparents.
