Greetings! I'm Steven Thompson, your next District 1 Commissioner. I've lived in South Stevens County for 24 years and retired in 2017 after a long career in the communications industry. During this time, I worked for companies like Northern Telecom, Star Datacom, The Satellite Systems Store, and ADT. My positions ranged from apprentice to field technician to sales, management, and ownership. I served as a shop steward and became a CWA executive board member for added excitement. In 2021, the Ford Wellpinit wildfire swept past our home, headed for Loon Lake. Heavy winds from the south pushed the fire north. We survived day one. On day two, the winds shifted, forcing the fire back to our property. The advice from FireWise saved our home. Folks, keep the dry grasses and weeds away from your structures. And make sure there's a safe, cleared area for firefighters to park a water truck. Yes, there's never a dull moment at Happy Hill Homestead. As I write, over 200 western larch seedlings are in their third growing season. I thank Owen at Quartzite Nursery in Chewelah for his advice. Clifty View in Bonners Ferry supplied two-year-old bare-root seedlings to start our tree farm. If you're a wildfire victim, please stop by for a free tree.
  • Thirty years ago, the Republican party claimed to support 'term limits'; They Lied! Back then, the 'term limits' champion was H. Ross Perot. Today, Perot's protege Donald J. Trump carries the 'term limits' torch. I stand with President Trump. During this campaign, I'm asking every candidate I come into contact with, "Where Do You Stand on 'term limits,' Yea or Nay? Answers are available at NewGOP.airwerx.com. Folks, we need action! Support candidates who'll put 'term limits' on the local and statewide ballot. Let the people decide, Term Limits! [Yea] or Nay!
  • I see a bully when I think of the man currently holding the position I seek. Someone who suppresses critical information from public view, then scolds those who object to his wishes and (later) whines when confronted in grocery stores. Why would a public servant want to hide from the people he serves? Worse yet, Why would our commissioner and his wife participate in a lawsuit against the very people he's elected to serve? I could continue, but I've made my point. Article 1, Section 1 of the Washington state constitution reads, "All political power is inherent in the people, and governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and are established to protect and maintain individual rights."
  • Every county in Washington state should grant its citizens the right to Initiative, Referendum, and Recall. Please put it on the local ballot. Our state constitution guarantees it, but career politicians stand in our way. If you want to save America, send the lobbyists and foreign governments packing. This is our county, our state, our country. Wake up, my friends. We can Make Stevens County, Washington, and America Great!
We have a civic duty, not only for ourselves but for generations to come. My passion is to place you at the table. Give yourself the voice you've always had but were afraid to express. When I travel to political events in our neighborhoods, I see who's missing and wonder if they'll ever feel their duty to become involved. Help guide our path forward in a legal, professional, pro-American direction. Dear youngsters, I know you're busy, attempting to work your way up whichever ladder you choose. Please know that most of us old folk want you to succeed. Join us, talk to us, and tell us your fears and concerns. Positively express yourself and help guide our path. May God be with you while striving to live an upright life.
There are too many to mention. Those who wrote and signed our Declaration of Independence, along with H. Ross Perot and President Donald J. Trump top my populist list. All were/are great men. Why? Each place processes ahead of purpose.
Two books come to mind: Not For Sale At Any Price by Ross Perot and Government Gangsters by Kash Patel.
Elected officials must always speak truth to power and lead by example. We cannot expect our citizens to obey the law unless we, the county commission, obey the law. Therefore, an investigation of the current county commission needs to take place. If our county prosecutor does not act, she should defer to a neighboring prosecutor. When a legislative body wants to raise taxes for whatever purpose, they're obligated by law to follow the legal process. Which is to draft a legally constructed proposition, sit two committees, for and against, then remain neutral, thus allowing the voters to decide. This didn't happen in 2023 and everyone in county government in Colville, Washington knows it. I hear practically everyone running for public office lay claim to their personal honesty, integrity, accountability, and the new buzzword, transparency. Talk is cheap, and for a little Missouri, Show Me! Looking back, I read where a current sitting county commissioner laid claim to being "transparent." So, I must ask, where was your transparency when you and your two amigos failed to seat an against committee in 2023? Talk is cheap, and perhaps those in District 3 will begin to ask questions. Then again, when citizens are lulled into a state of permanent political hibernation, local corruption takes precedence. Wake up, Stevens County!
I'm a populist who realizes when I'm over the target, for that's when unwarranted attacks begin. At first, they'll ignore you. When you cannot be ignored, they'll censor you. Then, they'll create a scheme to side-step you when censorship is no longer a worthy option. Truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God!
Oversight! Department and agency leaders and staff have essential roles. The commission should address concerns when basic public services aren't being performed responsibly. If tax dollars are being wasted, commissioners should ask, why? If the quality of county services is lacking, commissioners should ask, why? An effective commission doesn't gag elected officials or county employees.
I want to be remembered as a person who helped save America from evildoers, communists, and tyrants.
The year was 1963, when, as RFK Jr. states, "The CIA killed my uncle["] (JFK). I was seven.
My very first job? Aside from being asked by Mom to take out the garbage, Dad furnished a mechanical, push-powered lawn mower that I wheeled up and down my neighborhood, earning tax-free, under-the-table coinage for my piggy bank. This job lasted until younger kids became available.
That's easy. The Holy Bible. Proverbs 11:20. Words to live by. "They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the Lord: but such as are upright in their way are his delight." I pray for all non-believers to 'Find God' and strive to be upright in their way every day.
Everybody Hurts by REM, Hang On, everybody. No one said it was going to be easy.
At the tender age of eighteen, my Father, a railroad man, took me to the Southern Pacific hiring office. He gleamed with pride as he marched his only son inside to meet the hiring manager. I'll never forget, or forgive what happened next. "Benny, I could hire your boy today if he were a woman or something other than white." I love trains and grew up around them. As a little boy, Dad would take me to the shops where he was a machinist. When 4449 would pull into the Bakersfield yard for servicing, Dad would come home to get me so I could step aboard that steam-powered mass of oil and steel. I'd lay in bed dreaming of becoming an engineer someday. Yes, those dreams were shattered by a government that continues to this very day to discriminate by the color of one's skin.
I cannot think of a favorite joke. The biggest joke? Joe Biden!
When thinking about the Stevens County Commission, there's plenty of room for improvement. I lay much of the blame on the local Republican party. This organization needs to represent all Republicans. When ordinary Republicans express their concerns, their ideas, those in leadership need to listen. Too many good PCOs have been isolated, blacklisted, and driven away by those who appear to be self-serving, people who are [there] for a purpose. When purpose trumps process? I have a problem with that!
