Stuart is a retired U.S. Navy Commander and lifelong Granite Stater. He served as an accredited diplomat in Norway, an intelligence officer at sea, director of a maritime intelligence operations center, and an executive officer serving senior NATO leadership in Italy. He was an analyst for senior elected and military policymakers in D.C., and through multiple deployments he participated in Operations Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, Enduring Freedom, and Noble Eagle, as well as the Iraq Survey Group and counter-drug operations. After the Navy, Stuart served at home as Town Moderator.

He earned a BA in history from Boston University, an MS in Strategic Intel from the National Intelligence University, he completed Joint Professional Military Education through the National Defense University, and more recently, he graduated with an MA in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is now working toward a PhD in international relations.

For his service to the US-Norwegian alliance, Stuart was the first non-native to be awarded the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit by the King *and* the Royal Norwegian Navy Medal of Merit. He was additionally awarded a US Meritorious Service Medal, three Defense Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation, and various other personal, unit, and campaign citations.

Stuart is a proud husband and father who finds peace in motorcycling and cutting wood for our long, NH winters.
  • Defending the Constitution. As a retired Navy Commander, Stu is a sworn defender of the US Constitution. He spent 20 years doing just that. Now more than ever, our foundational principles are under siege, including our very identity as a democracy. This is Stu's most urgent mission: keeping us free and civil, and reminding us that we are all American. Whatever our political stripes, we have an obligation to one another.
  • Supporting Public Education. Stu believes that for the sake of national security, and for future generations to succeed, we must equip all children with the tools and opportunities they need, regardless of zip code. Stu will push to repeal the school voucher program that pilfers taxpayer funds, and he'll push to make school funding fairer, especially for our district.
  • Protecting New Hampshire's Environment. Stu understands that New Hampshire's natural beauty is essential to both our identity and our economy. He will work to preserve our logging industry for future generations. He will fight to keep our lakes clean, our air pure, and our wildlife thriving. We can do this without crushing working men and women, like truckers, farmers, and plow drivers.
Our tax system is patently unfair, regressive, and getting worse. Those of us with the lowest incomes are paying far more, proportionately, than our wealthy counterparts, and every tax "cut" my opponent votes for results in increased property taxes for those least able to afford them.
If you want to know how intelligent, kind people fall prey to cults, be they political, personality, or religious, read Erik Hoffer's "True Believer". He diagnosed in 1954 what is happening to us today. Brilliant.
Open mindedness and clarity of thought, the ability to resist group think, the willingness to interrogate one's own assumptions, and a healthy skepticism of all platform ideologies. Consideration and compassion for *all* humans, whatever their political philosophies. The desire to help, and the desire to play to people's best instincts. Never cynically playing to hate, fear, and anger.
I started by mowing lawns and waiting tables, but I'd say my best formative experience was working in the fields of a vegetable farm. It taught me the value of hard labor, sweat, dirt, sun, and wages. I've tried to pass that on to my kids, too.
The lack of civility, the cost of housing, the attacks on public education, the fact that we're getting older as a state, and the insufficient number of tradesmen (and tradeswomen!).
Political maneuvering is an art form learned through experience, so yes. But we can also keep the government fresh and in touch with the people's needs through healthy turnover.
Absolutely, particularly across partisan divides... and now more than ever. We have to move away from zero-sum, "winner take all" majoritarian impulses. We would do well to spend more time listening to our political opponents.
It isn't appropriate for this forum. ;)
The more the better. I understand when secrets are appropriate--that is rarely ever the case with State Government.
