Stuart M. Bernstein was a judge for the United States bankruptcy court, Southern District of New York. He was appointed to the court on November 24, 1993. He retired from the court on September 30, 2020.[1]

Education

Judge Bernstein received his bachelor's degree from Queens College of the City University of New York in 1972 and his J.D. from Fordham University in 1975.[2][3]

Career

From September 1975 until March 1978, Bernstein was an associate at the New York law firm of Rosenman & Colin. From March 1978 until September 1982, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. For several years prior to his appointment to the bench in November 1993, he practiced law with the New York firm of Kensington & Ressler, P.C.[3]

On January 14, 2014, the Southern District of New York began the reassignment of all ongoing cases related to winding down the assets of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities to Judge Bernstein following the unexpected death of Judge Burton R. Lifland. Bernstein was only the second member of the court to oversee the case, as the late Judge Lifland had presided over the Madoff bankruptcy proceedings since their inception in December 2008.[4][5]
