Sui juris is a Latin term meaning "in one's own right."[1] More specifically, in order to be considered sui juris, one must have full legal rights and must not be under the power or guardianship of another person. Anyone who has reached the age of majority, or is no longer a minor, is presumed to be sui juris. For example, in the United States the age of majority is 18, so a person becomes sui juris when they reach this age. This holds true unless an individual has been emancipated, in which case he or she may become sui juris at a younger age.[2][3]
