Superintendent primaries both headed to runoff: Georgia state executive primary elections review

Atlanta, Georgia: With nearly all precincts reporting, the results of yesterday's state executive primaries were as follows:
- Both incumbents who faced primary challengers - Gov. Nathan Deal (R) and District 4 Public Service Commissioner Bubba McDonald (R) - won easily, each overtaking two challengers. Deal will face Democrat Jason Carter and Libertarian Andrew Hunt in November, while McDonald will face Democrat Daniel Blackman.
- Doreen Carter defeated Gerald Beckum in the Democratic primary for Georgia Secretary of State for the nomination to face Republican incumbent Brian Kemp in the general election.
- Liz Johnson scored the Democratic nomination in the primary for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, overtaking opponent Keith Heard by almost 40 percentage points. Johnson will face GOP incumbent Ralph Hudgens.
- Stealing some of the spotlight away from the top of the ticket, both Superintendent of Schools primaries failed to produce a definitive victor and are headed to runoffs. The top two finishers in each field will face off on July 22: Alisha Thomas Morgan and Valarie Wilson for the Democrats; Mike Buck and Richard Woods for the Republicans.
