Surya Dhakar was a 2017 Republican candidate for District 56 of the Virginia House of Delegates.

Dhakar was a candidate for the Three Chopt District seat on the Henrico County School Board in Virginia. The seat was up for general election on November 4, 2014. Surya Dhakar lost the general election on November 4, 2014.

Surya Dhakar has been a resident of Henrico County, Virginia. Dhakar received his Ph.D. in oceanography from Old Dominion University and his D.D.S. from the Virginia Commonwealth University. His professional experience includes operating a dental practice in the Glen Allen area. Dhakar has served as the president of the India Association of Virginia twice.[1]

A primary election took place on June 13, 2017. The filing deadline for primary election candidates was March 30, 2017. Dhakar received endorsements from 7th U.S. Congressional District candidate David Brat (R), State Sen. Steve Martin (R-11), State Rep. Peter Farrell (R-56), State Rep. Rob Bell (R-58), State Rep.
