Susan Harrell Black is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. She joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Prior to her service on the Eleventh Circuit, she was a district judge on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.[1]
Early life and education
Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Black earned her B.A. from Florida State University in 1964, her J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law in 1967, and her LL.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1984.[1]

Black was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit by President George H.W. Bush on March 10, 1992, to a seat vacated by Thomas Clark. The American Bar Association rated Black Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on Black's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on June 4, 1992, and her nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on June 11, 1992. Black was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1992, and she received her commission the next day. She assumed senior status on February 25, 2011.[1][3] She was succeeded in this position by Judge Adalberto Jordan.
Middle District of Florida
Black was nominated to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida by President Jimmy Carter on May 22, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Black was confirmed by the United States Senate on July 23, 1979, and she received her commission the next day. Black served as chief judge of the court from 1990 to 1992. She resigned from the district court on September 3, 1992, upon her elevation to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.[1] Black was succeeded in this position by Judge Henry Adams.
