Noteworthy cases

Supreme court reverses Borman ruling

In a 6-to-1 decision, the Michigan Supreme Court reversed Judge Susan Borman's decision, ruling against a 2005 fire department restructuring plan by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. The high court determined that the mayor's decision did not address whether the changes addressed issues of public safety.[4]

Teachers strike, defy Borman's order

The Detroit Federation of Teachers voted to strike on August 27, 2008. According to Karen Sepanski, a teacher from Western High School, "People were just fed up, plain and simple. They had a whole year to figure this contract out, and in the end the school board basically said 'take it or leave it.'" Judge Borman heard the case, and ordered nonstop negotiations to shorten the strike. Public sector strikes are illegal, but in 1994, the Michigan legislature amended the law, requiring judges to order any striking public workers back to work, according to Labornotes.org.[5]
