Susan McCauley was appointed as the interim commissioner of education for Alaska. Governor Bill Walker (I) and the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development named her to the position in February 2016, effective March 1, the resignation date of her predecessor Michael Hanley. Walker said in a news release that he and the Board of Education made a decision to "steer the state's education system in a new direction," and that he would work with the department to find a new leader in the coming months.[1]
Biography
Prior to being appointed as the interim education commissioner, McCauley was the director of the Education Department's teaching and learning support division, the largest division of the department.[1] Prior to her time in the department of education, McCauley worked as a teacher, principal and administrator in urban and rural Alaska.[2]

McCauley earned a doctorate degree in education policy and leadership from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.[2]
