|- The economy in NC is threatened by ongoing neglect of rural areas by state lawmakers, a priority on passing laws that feed the divisive culture wars, and a severe under-funding of public schools. I believe that shifting legislative priorities to people first policies that lead to excellent schools, healthy communities, affordable housing, quality child and elder care and to funding state and local partnerships to achieve growth in rural communities will benefit working families.
- The easy access to assault weapons and the lack of safeguards to prevent gun ownership for those with mental health issues or a violent history are the two biggest threats to public safety. Common sense gun legislation is favored by responsible gun owners and would go a long way toward making students safer in schools, women safe from violent partners and mentally ill citizens safe from their own worst impulses.
- We need to pass a constitutional amendment to the NC constitution to preserve the rights of women to make their own family planning decisions. Limits on abortion after viability of the fetus outside the mother's body could be considered. In all cases, clearly defined and written exceptions in the case of rape, incest or the health of the mother should be codified.
