Throughout the last 35 years, I have served as a Commissioner of the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, a Board Member for the NAACP Las Vegas Chapter, a Board Member & Secretary-Treasurer of the South Asian Bar Association, and Advisory Board Member of the CCSD magnet school, Advanced Technology Academy.
In terms of civic engagement, I am the founding President of the South Asian Political Network Alliance (SAPNA), a non-partisan PAC focused on local and state politics in Nevada. As a graduate university student, I served as an elected member of the university's Student Government and Graduate Council, which gave me my first experiences with the public policy within higher education. This set a foundation for my commitment to the growth and continued advocacy for higher education in the State of Nevada.
As Regent, I will make it a priority to represent the uniquely diverse population of students in Nevada. My background has positioned me to help assist students in tackling complex matters such as funding mechanisms and access to scholarships.- I strongly believe in education as a backbone to a productive and inclusive society.
- My experience in advocating for various communities in our society proves that I am the right candidate to make sure higher education in Nevada receives fair and honest representation.
- Higher education should not be cost prohibitive for hard working and academically talented students.

2016
Nigam's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[9]
Job Creation
- Excerpt: "I will support and encourage all legislation to support private sector job creation. I will diligently pursue bringing high end service oriented businesses to move to Southern Nevada as we provide excellent infrastructure and provide incentives for high paying service jobs."
Taxes / Government Spending
- Excerpt: "I WILL ARDENTLY OPPOSE ANY NEW TAXES ON INDIVIDUALS OR BUSINESSES, especially during the current economic conditions. At the same time I will establish a citizen task force to study Government/Public Sector spending and at the same time will call for an administrative audit (for efficiency and effectiveness) of all the Government programs without significantly impacting the services for the poor and needy."
Education
- Excerpt: "I am a fervent supporter of improving our education system with accountability from all the participants – parents, students, educators, administrators and the community. I come from the family of educators. Education is the building block of prosperous communities."
Healthcare
- Excerpt: "I am for taking a bureaucracy out of the current health care system. I will push for having a more direct relationship between the provider (Physician) and the consumer with a goal of providing quality care eliminating wastage and fraud at all levels of public spending on health care especially the Medicaid."
Guns
- Excerpt: "I strongly support the second amendment sot that the law abiding citizens retain their complete rights to keep and bear arms and protect themselves from the real threat to their lives and properties. I will support repealing any laws restricting gun ownership to the law abiding citizens."
