Sydney Hanlon
Sydney Hanlon is a former associate justice on the Massachusetts Appeals Court, the intermediate appellate court for the state of Massachusetts. She served on the court from 2009 to 2020. She was appointed to this position by Governor Deval Patrick and took office on April 29, 2009.[1] Hanlon retired from the court on June 30, 2020.[2]
Education
Hanlon earned her undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1972 and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1975.[1]
Career
After law school, Hanlon took a job as an assistant district attorney in Norfolk County where she headed the Sexual Assault Unit from 1977 until 1982. She became an assistant U.S. attorney in Boston, serving on the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. In 1987, she became an assistant attorney general for the commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1990, Governor Michael Dukakis appointed her to the Dorchester District Court, which later became part of the Boston Municipal Court Department. She was appointed chair of this court's Domestic Violence Committee in 1992 and became the First Justice of the court in 1994. She also served on the Education Committee and has made two law-related trips to Russia (to teach about domestic violence and later as part of the Russian-American Rule of Law Consortium). Governor Deval Patrick appointed Hanlon to the Massachusetts Appeals Court in 2009.[1]
