Sylvester J. Ryan (1896-1981) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Ryan received a recess appointment from President Harry Truman on November 1, 1947, to a seat vacated by Francis Caffey; he was nominated on November 24, 1947, confirmed by the Senate on December 18, 1947, and received commission December 20th. He served as chief judge from 1959-1966. Ryan was succeeded in this position by Henry Werker. He assumed senior status on January 3, 1973, and served in that capacity until his death on April 10, 1981.[1]
