I currently serve as Judge on the Pierce County Superior Court for Department 1. I was appointed by Governor Inslee on December 7, 2022 and was sworn in in January 2023. I consider it a privilege to serve the Pierce County community in this capacity! My professional history includes owning a private practice in downtown Seattle representing clients in Bankruptcy and Family Law matters, working as a staff attorney for the Pierce County YWCA, representing victims of domestic violence, and serving on the Indeterminate Sentence Review Board immediately before being appointed to the bench. I am proud to have received the unanimous endorsement of my Pierce County Superior Court bench mates, and honored to be endorsed by bipartisan local elected officials.
  • I understand that courts around the country are faced with the significant challenge of improving access to justice and as a judicial officer I will continue to do the work I've already begun in addressing this issue alongside my Pierce County bench mates, and with judicial officers across the state.
  • I value Compassion, Fairness and Integrity. These are the values that I draw on as I preside over legal disputes in my courtroom. My goal is to ensure that everyone who leaves my courtroom, feels as though they've been allowed to meaningfully participate in their legal dispute in a way that feels empowering and not diminishing.
  • I am committed to promoting diversity and believe that a diverse bench ensures a wide range of perspectives, experiences, and knowledge and goes the serve the community in a fair and equitable manner.
As a judicial officer I do not believe I can comment on public policy.
I cannot think of a particular book or film, but my legal philosophy is rooted in fairness, equity, and respect for people and the rule of law. I believe that every individual who enters the courtroom deserves to be treated with dignity and provided a fair opportunity to be heard. As a judge, I focus on applying the law impartially and ensuring that each decision is based on the facts and applicable legal principles.
I believe I possess a strong commitment to fairness, equity, justice and compassion. These are essential characteristics for a Superior Court Judge because we are tasked with managing a wide range of cases with impartiality and respect for all people irrespective of their background.
One of the critical responsibilities of a Superior Court Judge is ensuring that the judicial system is accessible and efficient. Judges work not only to preside over cases but to ensure court proceedings are conducted in a way that everyone can engage with, even if they aren’t familiar with legal processes. This helps maintain public trust in the justice system.
I want to leave a legacy of mentorship and service. One of my favorite quotes is from Thurgood Marshall, "None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody- a parent, a teacher, and Ivy League crony, or a few nuns- bent down and helped us pick up our boots." I often reflect on all the people who helped me carry my boots along the way, it humbles me and affirms my commitment to pay it forward in the form of mentorship.

Judges work not only to preside over cases but to ensure court proceedings are conducted in a way that everyone can engage with, even if they aren’t familiar with legal processes. As I stated earlier, my legal philosophy is rooted in fairness, equity, the respect for people and the rule of law. My goal is to ensure that everyone who comes into my courtroom, feels as though they've had a meaningful opportunity to participate in their legal dispute, and that they leave my courtroom feeling empowered and not diminished.
I really admire Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson for her intelligence, tenacity, and bravery.
Absolutely! Empathy allows judges to fully listen to and understand the unique circumstances of each person who enters the courtroom. It’s essential to treating all parties with dignity while maintaining the impartiality necessary to apply the law fairly.
Yes, I have been rated “Exceptionally Well Qualified” by Washington Women Lawyers.
I am running for re-election to continue serving our community with fairness, integrity, and a commitment to accessible justice. My goal is to uphold the law while ensuring that all participants in my courtroom understand and meaningfully engage with the process. I have worked hard to reduce case backlogs, promote equity, and build public trust, and I look forward to continuing that work.
As an incumbent judge, my experience has shown me that understanding how public institutions function and interact with the community is invaluable. While judges must remain impartial, experience in serving the public helps provide perspective and informs decision-making. It strengthens a judge’s ability to serve fairly and equitably.
One of the primary concerns in our legal system today is ensuring that everyone has fair and equal access to justice. Barriers like financial challenges, lack of representation, and language difficulties can prevent people from fully engaging in the judicial process. My focus is on reducing these barriers to create a more equitable system.
The greatest opportunity for the legal system in Washington is improving access to justice. This includes addressing case backlogs, expanding legal aid, and making court procedures more user-friendly, especially for self-represented litigants. By focusing on equity and efficiency, we can better serve the community.
Having been appointed by the Governor in 2022, elected to this position last year, and now running for re-election, I have no interest in seeking another office and instead remain focused on serving as your Pierce County Superior Court Judge. I consider the service to the Pierce County community an honor and a privilege.
Bar Association ratings provide valuable insights into a candidate’s legal knowledge, experience, and temperament, especially from those who work closely with the judge. While they are important, the true measure of a judge’s ability comes from their consistent application of the law and the respect they foster in their courtroom.
Unanimously endorsed by Pierce County Superior Court Judges, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland, Pierce County Executive Bruce Dammeier, Pierce County Councilmembers Ryan Mello, Jani Hitchens, Robyn Denson, Marty Campbell, Speaker Laurie Jinkins, Senator Yasmin Trudeau, Representative Melanie Morgan, Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards, Tacoma City Councilmembers Sarah Rumbaugh and Jamika Scott, Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, Helen Whitener, Raquel Montoya- Lewis, Sheryl Gordon McCloud, Pierce County Central Labor Council, Firefighters Local 31, Pierce County Sheriffs Guild, Pierce County Democrats, and many more!
