He has also been a senior advisor to Michael Dukakis (D), Al Gore (D), and John Kerry (D).

Career

Tad Devine attended Brown University and Suffolk University Law School, and beginning in 1980, he started his political career as a delegate tracker for Jimmy Carter's (D) 1980 presidential re-election campaign. In 1984, he was a deputy delegate director for Walter Mondale's (D) presidential campaign.[1]

In 1988, Devine was director of delegate selection and field operations for Michael Dukakis’ presidential campaign and, during the general election, was campaign manager for Dukakis' vice presidential nominee Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D). He worked in law and academia during the late 1980s and early 1990s, serving as law clerk for the Rhode Island Superior Court, associate attorney for Winston & Strawn and assistant to the president of Boston University. He also worked as chief of staff for the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, for a year.[2]

In 1992, Devine was campaign manager for former Sen. Bob Kerrey's (D-Neb.) presidential bid.[3] A few years later, in 1995, Devine co-founded Devine Mulvey Longabaugh, a political strategy firm in Washington, D.C. Devine has served as president for the firm since 1995.[4]

Devine was an advisor for Bernie Sanders' 1996 U.S. House campaign and then again for Sanders' 2006 Senate campaign.[5] In 2000, Devine was a media consultant for Jon Corzine (D) in his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat from New Jersey.[6] That same year, he served as a senior advisor for the Al Gore and Joe Lieberman presidential campaign. Devine followed this as a senior advisor for John Kerry and John Edwards' 2004 presidential campaign.[3]

Devine has international campaign consulting experience as well, working on presidential and prime minister elections in Colombia, Israel, Peru, Bolivia, Ireland, Honduras and Ukraine.[1]

He is not only a longtime client but a friend."[8] Salon referred to Devine as "the Karl Rove to Bernie Sanders’ 2016 populist uprising."[9]

Devine speaking with Bloomberg about the Bernie Sanders campaign, June 2015

In June 2015, Tad Devine spoke on Bloomberg Business about the state and strategy of Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign.[10]

Comments on voter data breach

In December 2015, the Sanders campaign experienced criticism of its handling of a data breach in which several campaign staffers accessed Clinton's proprietary voter data. When asked whether he and other campaign officials were sorry about the breach, in particular as it pertained to one of the staffers who was fired because of the incident, Devine told Bloomberg Politics "absolutely, he made a mistake and that's why he was fired."[11]

Devine alluded to his remarks about the staffer and the data breach on December 19, 2015 in a tweet sent before the Democratic debate in Manchester, New Hampshire, saying, "When I said a fired staffer made a ‘mistake,’ I meant it in the same way @HillaryClinton did about the Iraq war."[12]

On July 29, 2016, it was reported that Tim Canova (D) had hired Devine Mulvey Longabaugh, to help in his primary campaign against Debbie Wasserman Schultz. According to Politico, Canova's hiring of the firm was the "latest move from Sanders supporters to go after Wasserman Schultz, after their outrage stemming from leaked emails drove her to resign as chairman of the Democratic National Committee."[13] Sanders himself, Our Revolution, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, and Revolution Messaging, an ad firm that also helped with Sanders' presidential campaign, worked on Canova's campaign.[14]

After two weeks working on Canova's campaign, the firm withdrew its services. Politico noted that Devine Mulvey Longabaugh's withdrawal was part of a larger shift within Sanders' political sphere, citing resignations within the leadership of Our Revolution.[15]
