Tamara W. Ashford is an Article I federal judge for the United States Tax Court. She joined the court in 2014 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. Her current term will expire on December 18, 2029.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Ashford earned her bachelor's degree from Duke University in 1991, her J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1994, and her LL.M. in taxation, with an honors certificate of specialization in international taxation, from the University of Miami School of Law in 1997.[1]

Ashford was first nominated by President Barack Obama on September 18, 2013, to a seat on the United States Tax Court vacated by Mary Ann Cohen. Under provisions of Rule XXXI, paragraph six of the standing rules of the Senate, Ashford's nomination was returned to the president on January 3, 2014. President Obama resubmitted the nomination on January 6, 2014. Hearings on Ashford's nomination were held before the Senate Finance Committee on January 15, 2014, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) on February 4, 2014. Ashford was confirmed on a voice vote on November 20, 2014, and she received her commission on December 19, 2014, to serve a 15-year term on the court. Her current term will expire on December 18, 2029.[1][2][3]
