My husband and I have 4 adult children; Dan's children are both engineers like their dad, and my two are in the hospitality industry. I had fun raising Joe and Rachel, in St. Cloud; they attended school at Talahi, South and Tech and graduated from SCSU. Last fall our new daughter-in-law joined our family. I retired from teaching music after 34 years in St. Cloud Public Schools including South, Tech and 25 years at Talahi. It is close to 12,000 students whom I have taught. I have been in the lives of many families in St. Cloud. That is a career I am proud of.

For 17 years of leadership with ISAIAH, I met with school board members, the superintendent and state legislators regarding school testing and funding. I started an Education Task Force of teachers from Early Childhood to University. I've met with city leaders in St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids and Sartell, business owners and state legislators to promote the extension of NorthStar. I am part of the St. Cloud Community Policing Agreement. Recent work with ISAIAH includes being a board member of SCERAC, working on litigation for cross-subsidy funds for the St. Cloud Public School.

  • I have been involved in our community since I moved here in 1981 and I will continue to be involved in our community.
  • I will listen to the concerns, issues and joys of the people in my community.
  • I will find solutions and common ground to the issues that affect our community.
Healthcare that cares for all

Improved public schools through increased funding (Pre-K through University)
Bold solutions to the climate crisis
Affordable and safe places to call home
St. Cloud to shine as an inclusive community

Critical thinking
I believe someone elected to this office has a responsibility to listen to her constituents, to attend and be involved in community activities, to write legislation which progresses and improves the lives of the people in her district.
That I listen, I work hard, I accomplish goals, I stay involved.
The assassination of John F. Kennedy. I was 5 years old. When we were sent home from school, my teenage siblings were crying and talking about the tragedy.
JCPenney was my first job in high school. I worked 2 years during high school and 1 year during college.
Canvas by Sarah Hope. It was a historical-fiction novel about 3 related women , from different generations, set in Victoria, Australia. I was visiting Australia and the book described the country, history, art, landscape so vividly, comprehensively and personnally. Plus, the author was a known community member of friends of mine. So there was a personal connection.
Though I cannot think of a specific character, I would say one who is adventurous, strong, curious and one who stands up for her rights and the rights of others.
Because I listen well, I struggle with interrupting a conversation that has gotten off-the-topic.
A bill originates in the House, but House alone is not sufficient to get it converted into law. House cannot just discuss a bill and pass it after approval to the Governor to make it a law of the land. The role of the Senate becomes important here. After the bill has been approved by the House, it goes to the Senate where discussion over it takes place, and often a bill that gets passed in the House is discussed for more than a week in the Senate. If it is passed by the Senate after ironing out differences in the opinion between the two chambers of the legislation, the bill is forwarded to the Governor to be approved, and finally becomes a law of the land.
Yes. I believe a state legislator should have leadership experience, good communication skills and experience in community organizing.
Our state's greatest challenge over the next decade is recovering from the COVID-19 crisis. We need to recover our health, our healthcare and our economic stability.
Yes, definitely. The legislature is a team working together for the improvement of the people of the state of Minnesota. Though the team may discuss and disagree in meetings, the team (legislature) should be united and supportive to each other to the public.
Not as a first-year legislator. My first year, I want to observe and learn. Later, I may be interested in a leadership role.
A fifth-grade teacher, in expounding on the merits/demerits of comprehensive testing, gave this example: A fifth grade student enters the year with a 3rd grade reading level. She and her teacher work hard and she progresses to reading at a 4.5 grade reading level by the end of fifth grade. The student takes the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment at the end of the year. She fails at the fifth grade level. She and the teacher/school are reported as failing. The report does not acknowledge the progress and success of the student and of the teacher that school year. I look to change school assessments to a progress accountability assessment instead of a comprehensive, end-of-the-year assessment.
