|Throughout my tenure, I have been steadfast in my commitment to address the pressing issues that affect us all. Whether it's advocating for fair taxation relief for co-op, condo, and homeowners or spearheading efforts to combat open-air drug use, I have rolled up my sleeves and navigated the corridors of City Hall and Albany with confidence and expertise.
Furthermore, I have been a staunch advocate for the preservation of Section 9 in our public housing, recognizing its pivotal role in ensuring accessible and affordable housing for our residents. My track record speaks for itself - I am someone who not only understands the complexities of these issues but also possesses the strategic acumen and determination to drive meaningful change.
As we move forward, I invite you to join me in this journey towards a brighter future for our community. With your unwavering support and my steadfast leadership, I am confident that together, we can continue to make significant strides towards a more equitable and prosperous district.- Housing:
I am committed to ensuring that everyone in our community has access to safe, affordable housing. I will work tirelessly to preserve and expand programs like Section 9 in public housing, advocating for policies that prioritize housing affordability and security for all residents.
As your representative, I will fight to address the housing crisis by implementing innovative solutions and advocating for fair taxation relief for co-op, condo, and homeowners. - Quality of Life: I believe in improving the overall quality of life for our community members. I will work to address issues such as open-air drug use, advocating for policies that prioritize community safety and well-being. From enhancing public spaces to supporting local businesses, I am committed to fostering a vibrant and thriving community for all.
- Seniors: Our seniors deserve to age with dignity and grace in their own homes, with access to the support and resources they need. I will prioritize initiatives that support our senior population, including expanding access to healthcare, social services, and affordable housing options. As your advocate, I will work to ensure that our seniors receive the respect, care, and support they deserve, allowing them to remain active and engaged members of our community.
Homelessness Prevention: Addressing homelessness requires multifaceted approaches, including affordable housing, mental health services, and supportive programs. I am committed to developing comprehensive strategies to prevent homelessness and provide resources for those experiencing housing insecurity.
Empathy: A deep sense of empathy and compassion for constituents is essential for effective representation. Elected officials must understand and respond to the diverse needs, concerns, and experiences of their constituents, particularly those who are marginalized or vulnerable.
Commitment to Public Service: Serving the public interest should be the foremost priority for elected officials. They must be dedicated to advancing policies and initiatives that benefit the community as a whole, rather than pursuing personal or partisan agendas. A strong commitment to public service drives accountability, transparency, and integrity in governance.
Accessibility: Elected officials should be accessible and responsive to the needs and concerns of their constituents. They must actively engage with the community, listen to feedback, and provide opportunities for meaningful dialogue and participation. Accessibility fosters trust, strengthens representation, and ensures that government remains accountable to the people.
Adaptability: The political landscape is constantly evolving, and elected officials must be adaptable and responsive to change. They should demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and resilience in navigating shifting priorities, emerging challenges, and evolving circumstances.
Collaboration: I value collaboration and believe in working with colleagues, stakeholders, and community members to address complex issues and find solutions that benefit everyone. By fostering partnerships and building consensus, I can effectively navigate the legislative process and achieve positive outcomes for our district.
Empathy: I possess a strong sense of empathy and compassion, which allows me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and understand the challenges they face. I believe in listening with an open heart and working to uplift and empower marginalized communities.
Legislation: Elected officials have a primary role in drafting, proposing, and voting on legislation. They work to develop laws and policies that address pressing issues, improve the quality of life for residents, and promote the common good.
Constituent Services: Elected officials provide assistance and support to constituents in navigating government services, addressing concerns, and resolving issues. They act as a liaison between constituents and government agencies, advocating on behalf of individuals and communities.
Oversight: Elected officials have a responsibility to oversee the implementation of laws and policies, as well as the actions of government agencies and officials. This includes conducting hearings, investigations, and audits to ensure accountability and transparency in government operations.
Budgeting: Elected officials play a key role in the budgeting process, including developing and approving budgets that allocate public funds for essential services, programs, and infrastructure. They must prioritize spending, balance competing priorities, and ensure fiscal responsibility.
Community Engagement: Elected officials engage with constituents through public meetings, town halls, forums, and other outreach activities. They seek input from residents, communicate government initiatives, and foster dialogue on important issues affecting the community.
Policy Advocacy: Elected officials advocate for policies and initiatives that advance the interests of their constituents and address pressing challenges facing the community. They work with colleagues, stakeholders, and advocacy groups to build support for legislative proposals and shape public policy.
Equity and Opportunity: I want to create a legacy where every individual has equitable access to opportunities for success, regardless of their background or circumstances. This means working to dismantle systemic barriers to education, employment, healthcare, and housing, and creating pathways for economic mobility and social advancement for all residents.
Community Empowerment: I aim to leave a legacy of empowered communities where residents are actively engaged in shaping their own futures. By fostering a culture of civic participation, collaboration, and grassroots activism, I hope to empower individuals and neighborhoods to advocate for their needs, drive positive change, and build strong, resilient communities.
Social Justice and Inclusion: I am committed to leaving a legacy of social justice and inclusion, where diversity is celebrated, and everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. This means fighting against discrimination, prejudice, and inequality in all its forms and creating a society where everyone feels valued, heard, and included.
Environmental Sustainability: I aspire to leave a legacy of environmental sustainability, where our natural resources are protected and preserved for future generations. By promoting sustainable practices, combating climate change, and investing in renewable energy and conservation efforts, I hope to leave a healthier, more resilient planet for our children and grandchildren.
In these situations, it's important to remember that everyone's journey is unique, and people may have their reasons for not wanting or being able to accept help at a given moment. It's essential to approach these situations with empathy, patience, and understanding, recognizing that change takes time and individuals may need to come to their own realizations or reach a point of readiness before they're able to accept assistance.
Communication: Open and transparent communication is key to a productive relationship between the governor and the state legislature. Regular dialogue, exchange of information, and consultation on legislative proposals are essential for ensuring that decisions are well-informed and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Effective communication fosters understanding, builds trust, and facilitates cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of government.
Homelessness: The lack of affordable housing contributes to homelessness, with many individuals and families unable to afford stable housing. Homelessness not only poses significant humanitarian challenges but also strains public resources and undermines community well-being. Efforts to address homelessness must include strategies to increase affordable housing options, provide supportive services, and address the root causes of homelessness, such as poverty and mental health issues.
Displacement and Gentrification: Rising housing costs and gentrification are displacing longtime residents and communities, exacerbating inequalities and disrupting social cohesion. As neighborhoods undergo rapid changes, there is a risk of cultural erasure, loss of community identity, and widening disparities in access to housing and economic opportunities. Policies to combat displacement and promote equitable development are critical to preserving neighborhood diversity and ensuring that all residents can benefit from economic growth.
Policy Expertise: Experience in government or politics can provide legislators with valuable insights and expertise in specific policy areas. This knowledge can be instrumental in crafting well-informed legislative proposals, analyzing complex issues, and developing innovative solutions to address pressing challenges facing their communities.
Collaboration: Building relationships with other legislators fosters a spirit of collaboration and cooperation. Effective governance often requires bipartisan support and consensus-building to advance legislative priorities and address complex issues. By establishing positive relationships with their colleagues, legislators can work together more effectively to find common ground, negotiate compromises, and achieve shared goals for the benefit of their constituents.
Information Sharing: Relationships with other legislators provide opportunities for information sharing, knowledge exchange, and learning from each other's experiences. Legislators can share insights, expertise, and best practices on legislative processes, policy issues, and constituent concerns. This exchange of information enhances decision-making, strengthens policy outcomes, and promotes innovation in governance.
Coalition Building: Strong relationships with other legislators are essential for building coalitions and alliances around specific policy initiatives or legislative agendas. Legislators can leverage their networks and connections to mobilize support, rally colleagues around common causes, and amplify their collective voice on behalf of their constituents. Coalition building enhances the effectiveness of advocacy efforts and increases the likelihood of achieving legislative success.
This story resonated with me because it highlights a pressing public health and safety issue that affects not only the individual families directly impacted but also the broader community as a whole. Children should be able to play and explore their surroundings without fear of encountering hazardous materials like needles, and it's heartbreaking to hear about the stress and anxiety that this situation causes for parents and caregivers.
As a legislator, I am committed to addressing this issue and ensuring that our children are protected from exposure to harmful substances in public spaces. This may involve advocating for increased funding for needle disposal programs, supporting community-based initiatives to clean up public areas, and working with local law enforcement and health agencies to implement measures to prevent needle littering and improve public safety.
I believe it's essential to provide resources and support for families and children who may be affected by this issue. This could include educational programs to teach children about the dangers of needles and how to safely navigate their environments, as well as access to counseling and support services for families dealing with the emotional impact of exposure to needles.
Additionally, I would introduce legislation to end open-air drug use, which poses serious public health and safety risks and undermines the quality of life in our neighborhoods. By implementing comprehensive strategies to address substance abuse and addiction, we can create safer and healthier communities for all residents.

|I have been a Girl Scout for over 20 years, and I run four Girl Scout Troops in East Harlem from Kindergarten to 8th grade. I own an insurance and tax business in the community. I also run a non-profit that teaches the insurance business to teens and young adults aged 17-24 that have been in the court system and lack job training.
I am running to fight for the people in our neighborhood and push for policies that will strengthen our community.
As a resident of the community and a small business owner, I know the challenges that we face every day in this district.
I hope I can have your support to get the things we need in District 68.- Protecting, Expanding, Defining Affordable Housing
- Criminal Justice
- Supporting Seniors and Children
As your New York State Assemblymember, I'll fight for:
Funding Community Land Trust
Establishing a Buy-Down Program to turn vacant building and high-value homes into affordable housing
Establishing an Affordable Housing Fund to ensure developers are creating affordable housing
Establishing a Renter's Equity for those who want to own their homes in the future
Every resident to have access to affordable housing in our neighborhood and adjust the median income to reflect the neighbor
Repairing all NYCHA buildings and bringing it back to code so families can live in a mold and pest-free home
As your State Assemblywoman, I will work to ensure we see the funds that are promised so NYCHA residents can get the necessary repairs.
I will work to ensure we hold bad landlords accountable, so we can live in safe housing.
I will work to ensure we have the right tax abatement in place to make home-ownership affordable for now and in the future.
I will work to ensure access to employment and housing as the recently incarcerated return to our community.
I will work to ensure we get a clear answer on what affordable housing is and what it looks like for our community, so we can stay and live in affordable housing.
I will work to ensure access to employment and housing as the recently incarcerated return to our community. I will work to ensure we get a clear answer on what affordable housing is and what it looks like for our community, so we can stay and live in affordable housing.
I will work to raise the minimum wage to a livable wage so our community can stop working three to four jobs. As you can see, we have a lot of work to do in East Harlem, and with your help, I know we can make it happen.
To inspire the next generation to run for office and get their voice heard as well.

2017
Mapp participated in Ballotpedia's 2017 survey of municipal government candidates.[6] The following sections display her responses to the survey questions. When asked what her top priority would be if elected, the candidate made the following statement:
“ | Preserving our Affordable Housing Reforming our Family Court System |

—Tamika Mapp (July 20, 2017)[2] |

The candidate was asked to rank the following issues by importance in the city, with 1 being the most important and 12 being the least important: city services (trash, utilities, etc.), civil rights, crime reduction/prevention, environment, government transparency, homelessness, housing, K-12 education, public pensions/retirement funds, recreational opportunities, transportation, and unemployment. Mapp provided the following additional comments with her survey responses:
“ |
When seeking a leadership position, it is not always the most experienced or most "qualified" that is most effective. A role like City Council Member requires a person with relationship building skills. Someone that can collaborate and work with colleagues to advance legislation that will benefit NYC, while also reaching out and being accessible to district residents and ensuring their voices are being heard. Likewise, relationships should be forged with thought leaders and community activists with bold solutions to the issues that plague our community. It's time for new leadership, politics, as usual, has left us stuck. We have representatives who are at the mercy of Real Estate Developers and other big ticket donors, while I just want to represent the people. I am the best person to represent our district because I have a new and fresh approach to tackling issues like affordable housing, living wage, a path to citizenship, homelessness, parental alienation, mental health issues, education and many others. I'm not the same ole, same ole. I don't just talk a good game, show up to an event, give a speech and bounce. I stay and I roll up my sleeves, engage and share ideas. I am a community participant. I sit on the board of 596 acres advocating for community land access. I teach aspiring entrepreneurs through the services of WIBO training to support new and future business owners. I also manage 70 leaders and lead 421 young women to reach for their dreams and be an active part of this community.[7] |
