Smith ran in the 2009 election for New Jersey General Assembly District 23. Smith was bracketed with William Courtney. They were defeated by incumbent John DiMaio (R) and Erik Peterson (R) in the general election on November 3, 2009. Smith and Courtney were unopposed in the Democratic primary election on June 4, 2009.[2][3]
