I am a Proven, Purposeful, and Trusted Leader committed to advancing excellence in Kansas City Public Schools. As a current at-large school board member, Vice-Chair, and Finance Committee Chair; I have spent the past four years making informed, student-centered decisions that have improved academic outcomes, supported educators, and strengthened community partnerships.

A proud wife and mother of two KCPS students, I have a personal stake in ensuring our schools provide every child with a high-quality education. My passion for public education advocacy is rooted in both my lived experience and my 15 years in nonprofit leadership and four years in higher education administration. I bring a deep understanding of policy, governance, and organizational growth to my role on the board.

I have consistently supported our teachers and staff, voting in favor of all collective bargaining agreements and ensuring our educators have the resources they need to help students thrive. As we approach a pivotal moment for KCPS, I remain committed to stability, progress, and equity in our schools. It is my personal hope and mission to support the continued upward trajectory of the district making it the choice within our system.
  • Proven Leadership in KCPS: As a current board member, I bring experience, institutional knowledge, and a track record of making sound decisions that support student achievement and school success. KCPS needs steady leadership to continue moving forward.
  • Purposeful Advocacy for Students & Educators: I have championed policies that improve student outcomes, retain top teachers, and strengthen community partnerships. My leadership ensures every child has access to a high-quality education and the resources they need to thrive.
  • Trusted Commitment to Progress: I believe in equity, accountability, and innovation in our schools. I will continue working to improve student achievement, expand career pathways, and ensure strong fiscal management to build a brighter future for KCPS.
I am deeply passionate about educational equity, student achievement, and educator support. Every child deserves access to a high-quality education that prepares them for college, careers, and life success. I am committed to expanding career pathways, strengthening literacy efforts, and ensuring safe, thriving school environments. Supporting teachers and staff is also a priority—I advocate for fair wages, professional development, and resources that help them succeed. Through sound policy, community collaboration, and innovation, I will continue working to advance excellence in KCPS.
An elected official should demonstrate integrity, accountability, transparency, and a commitment to public service. Strong leadership requires active listening, informed decision-making, and a willingness to collaborate with stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes. I believe in equity, innovation, and fiscal responsibility, ensuring that every decision prioritizes students' success while maintaining public trust. Consistency, accessibility, and a solutions-oriented mindset are also critical—leadership isn’t about personal agendas, but about advancing policies that strengthen our schools and communities.
I have spent the last four years serving as an at-large board member, and that experience has made me even more informed, strategic, and committed to the success of KCPS. As a mother of two KCPS students, I take this role personally—I don’t just make decisions for other people's children; I make them for my own. I am a hard worker who approaches leadership with integrity, transparency, and a deep sense of responsibility.

Born and raised in Kansas City, I attended schools within the district, so I understand both its history and potential. I believe in equity, accountability, and making informed, student-centered decisions that position KCPS for long-term success. My leadership is rooted in honesty, collaboration, and a true desire to see our schools and community thrive. I don’t take this work lightly—I am committed to ensuring KCPS continues moving forward for generations to come.
A school board member is responsible for setting policies, overseeing the district budget, and ensuring strong governance that prioritizes student achievement. We must hire and evaluate the superintendent, approve strategic plans, and advocate for equitable resources across all schools. Our role is not to micromanage, but to ensure accountability, fiscal oversight, and continuous improvement. Additionally, we must engage with the community, listen to stakeholders, and make data-driven decisions that foster educational excellence and long-term success for KCPS students.
I want my legacy to be one of integrity and impact—that I kept my word, stood by my values, and made a meaningful difference. I want to be remembered as someone who advocated for students, supported educators, and helped shape a stronger KCPS.

Much like my parents, I hope that my memory will live on through the work I’ve done, the policies I’ve helped shape, and the students who have been positively impacted by my leadership. I want my contributions to matter not just in the moment, but long after I am gone, ensuring that Kansas City’s public schools remain a place where every child can thrive.
The first historical event I remember is the election of Ronald Reagan. I was very young when he was first elected, but I distinctly remember my school setting up voting booths for students to cast their ballots. That experience taught me from an early age about the right and responsibility of voting, which has stayed with me throughout my life.

Later, as I grew older, I learned more about how some of Reagan’s policies negatively impacted Black communities, particularly in areas like education and economic opportunity. That awareness shaped my commitment to advocacy and equity, ensuring that policy decisions consider those who have historically been left behind.
My very first job was at McDonald's on 350 Highway in Raytown. I began working that when I was 15 years old. I drive by it every Sunday on the way to church and it still looks the same. I learned a lot about working with others and kindness by working here.
Right now, my favorite book is The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. It has completely shifted my outlook on control—an illusion we often hold onto—and the freedom that comes from letting go. This book has helped me embrace the idea that I can’t control other people’s actions or decisions, only my own response to them. It has been a powerful reminder to focus on my own growth, energy, and peace, rather than trying to manage everything around me. It’s a mindset shift that has brought me clarity, reduced stress, and allowed me to lead and live with more authenticity and purpose.
I would want to be Shuri from Black Panther—a brilliant, confident, and fearless leader who uses her intelligence and innovation to uplift her people. Shuri isn’t just a genius; she’s also compassionate, resourceful, and unafraid to challenge the status quo. She balances her sharp wit with a deep sense of responsibility, proving that true leadership isn’t just about power—it’s about using your gifts to serve others. Like Shuri, I believe in thinking boldly, solving problems creatively, and always standing up for what’s right, no matter the challenge.
Grief and loss have been a struggle for me. I have lost both of my parents and have had to learn how to navigate adulthood, parenthood, and marriage without their guidance. I find joy in the thought that they raised me to be caring, kind, and to give back, and I am doing just that in my role as a public servant. I believe they are proud.
The primary job of a school board member is governance—not management. We must set policies, ensure accountability without overreach, and work in partnership with the superintendent to guide the district’s vision. A healthy balance of oversight, support, and strategic leadership is key to student success. Our job is to advocate for strong schools, hold the administration accountable for results, and ensure that policies reflect the needs of our students, families, and educators.
My constituents include students, families, teachers, school staff, administrators, and the broader Kansas City community. As an at-large board member, I represent all KCPS schools and neighborhoods, advocating for equitable access to quality education. Business leaders, elected officials, and nonprofit organizations also have a vested interest in strong public schools, as they contribute to workforce development and economic growth.
I will continue to advocate for equity in education by ensuring all students—regardless of background—have access to high-quality learning experiences, resources, and opportunities. For faculty and staff, I support competitive wages, professional development, and policies that promote teacher retention. I believe in engaging families and community partners to provide wraparound support for students and strengthen KCPS as a whole.
Good teaching combines strong instructional practices, cultural responsiveness, and student engagement. We measure this through student growth, classroom observations, and teacher feedback. I support innovative teaching models, ongoing professional development, and mentorship programs to ensure teachers continue to grow and excel.
I will advocate for fair state funding, strategic budgeting, and external partnerships to bring additional resources into KCPS. Strengthening community partnerships and leveraging grant opportunities can expand student programs and support educators without overburdening taxpayers.
School safety policies should be data-driven, student-centered, and informed by the voices of parents and educators. While we must ensure required safety measures are in place, we must also consider what truly makes students feel safe—strong relationships, mental health supports, and a positive school culture. I support proactive safety training, anti-bullying policies, and mental health services to create a secure and welcoming environment for all.
I support the creation of a Policy Committee to assess existing policies, review them regularly, and make necessary adjustments. This will ensure our policies remain relevant, effective, and aligned with the district’s evolving needs.
Freedom Incorporated, Southland Progress Alliance, Blaque KC
A thriving learning environment provides all necessary resources, fosters creativity, and sparks excitement for learning. Every student should have modern technology, well-maintained facilities, and access to enriching programs. I fully support the KCPS bond, which is essential for improving school buildings, updating learning spaces, and ensuring students learn in environments that are safe, inspiring, and conducive to academic success.
KCPS navigated the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic as best as possible, balancing health concerns with the need for academic continuity. Moving forward, I believe in gathering more input from parents, students, and educators to inform crisis response strategies. We must also strengthen virtual learning infrastructure and ensure all students have access to technology to be better prepared for future disruptions.
I believe in open communication, accessibility, and authentic engagement with parents. I will continue to attend school events, create opportunities to listen, and ensure families have opportunities to provide feedback on key decisions. Strengthening parent partnerships leads to stronger student outcomes, and I am committed to fostering trust between families and the school district.
Recruiting and retaining top talent requires competitive pay, a supportive work culture, and opportunities for professional growth. I support expanding teacher pipelines, partnering with universities, and offering incentives to attract high-quality educators. A strong recruitment strategy must also include listening to current staff to address concerns and improve retention.
Financial transparency and accountability are non-negotiable. Taxpayers deserve to know how public dollars are allocated, and it is the board’s responsibility to ensure funds are spent effectively to support student success. I advocate for clear reporting, regular audits, and open communication so that the community remains informed and engaged. Fiscal responsibility means balancing investments in students and staff with long-term sustainability, ensuring that KCPS remains strong for future generations.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Tanesha Ford is a former student of Kansas City Public Schools and an alum of University of Central Missouri. She is married to her husband David and together they have two young children - Dawson and Harper.

With 16 years of education experience, Tanesha has spent her career supporting young people in education and helping them go to college. Tanesha currently serves as the Executive Director of Kauffman Scholars, Inc. where she manages a team of dedicated education professionals. Tanesha was compelled to run for school board because she believes in the power of public education and sees the potential of Kansas City Public Schools. She is eager to do her part to address the widening achievement gap in urban education as compared to other areas in our region.

When Tanesha is not hard at work, she enjoys volunteering at organizations in the Kansas City area. She serves a board member for Show Me KC Schools, and the Skillbuilders Fund. In addition, she is a former board member for Girls on the Run of Greater Kansas City. Tanesha is a 2016 Alumna of the Centurions Leadership Program of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, President Elect of the Centurions Alumni Association, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the Sister Circle KC Giving Circle, and serves as the Scholarship Co-Chair for the Jackson County (MO) Chapter of The Links, Inc. She was also recognized as a member of Ingram’s 40 Under Forty: Class of 2018.
  • Our Children, Our priority: I want to address the achievement disparities that exist within our district and take a strategic approach in caring for our students’ needs--both in and out of the classroom.

  • College Preparation & Workforce Development: There are a lot of options for students to pursue after high school. Regardless of their decision, our students should be prepared for college and the workforce. That’s why strategic partnerships will be key in creating a successful future for KCPS students.
  • Parent & Community Engagement Parent Voice, Parent Choice: Parents are our most valued partners, I want to create a space for all parents to be engaged and empowered to support their students during their educational journey. Responsive Leadership: KCPS parents and the community deserve to be heard. I would like to amplify their voices by creating more opportunities for parents for shared dialogue, partnership, and decision making.
Fresh Perspective and Insights

A Comprehensive Approach to Challenges: Like many of our parents, I am also concerned about the lasting effects of COVID-19, a decrease in enrollment, and providing critical resources to our families most in need.

Reimagining Innovation: Our students deserve access to an interdisciplinary education. If elected, I would like to work to establish blended learning opportunities like Montessori and language immersion or performing arts and college prep, so students can enhance their educational experience.

Race, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: In order to move forward, we must acknowledge our history and the role that it has played in our educational system. It is important to me that the school board work together to address inequities, improve cultural competency among teachers, and recruit/retain more educators/ faculty of color.
