Arrest on federal fraud, theft charges, resignation (2024-2025)
On December 6, 2024, Anderson was arrested on federal public corruption charges, including five counts of wire fraud and one count of theft from a program receiving federal funds.[1][2] During an appearance in Boston federal court, she initially pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released without bail.[2][3]
Following Anderson's arrest, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called for her resignation. Wu said, "The serious nature of these charges undermine the public trust and will prevent her from effectively serving the city. I urge Councilor Fernandes Anderson to resign."[4]
On December 11, 2024, Anderson initially announced she would not resign. "People have the right to their opinion but they should allow for the privilege everyone has to due process," Anderson said.[5]
On April 8, 2025, Anderson agreed to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of theft involving federal funds. She announced she intended to resign as a member of the Boston City Council, representing District 7.[6]
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley said that the government would recommend a sentence of one year and one day, three years of supervised probation, and financial restitution in the amount of $13,000 following Anderson's guilty plea.[7]
"I will be resigning. It is the right thing to do. In coming days, I will evaluate transition plans and timeline with the District 7 Advisory Council. I will do everything possible to make an orderly exit to ensure my constituents’ needs are met," Anderson said following her guilty plea.[7]
On May 5, 2025, Anderson pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of theft involving federal funds in federal court in Boston.[8] On September 5, 2025, Anderson was sentenced to one month in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
