- Managing population growth will be a key issue in Mill Creek in the coming years and decades. The Puget Sound region is expected to grow by one million people in the next twenty years: Mill Creek was required to show capacity for growth by 3,500 people in that timeframe. It is important that as the population grows, we work together to maintain the things that make us love our city: green space and a sense of community. We are a beautiful city that will continue to be attractive for people to move to as long as we do what it takes to thrive. As we grow, we need to maintain our strong park system, keep the tree canopy, and strengthen our commitment to working with civic groups and offering city events and programs to keep people connected.
- Providing places for the community to gather and build a sense of belonging is very important. In the development of the South Town Center area, I want to see an outdoor public park as well as a public indoor gathering space. I strongly support the creation of a community center on the city-owned DRCC properties. This space should be a multi-use facility with rooms available to rent for meetings or events, performance space, and recreation space. The project to enhance the playground and the Veterans Monument at Library Park should be completed. And I support the city taking ownership of the Penny Creek Natural Area and working with community groups to keep it maintained as a natural resource for us all.
- The city is currently operating at an operational deficit. Work needs to be done to increase revenue and to work with partners to find sources of grant funding and cooperative ventures. The city is already running with a lean staff and has significant deferred maintenance which cannot be deferred further into the future. Additionally, the City faces rising costs for several things which are non-negotiable, including insurance, jail costs, and benefits packages for staff. Attracting new businesses to the city will increase the sales tax collected. Population growth can mean that the property tax burden can be shared across more people. These are complex problems and require complex solutions: if the solutions were simple it would be done!
