I have lived in Mill Creek for 23 years. My husband and I chose to raise our family here for the same reasons I hear from other residents: we love the green spaces, the small-town feel, and the abundance of amenities all around us. I have been the primary caregiver to five children for twenty-six years, building skills in logistics, time management, needs assessment analysis, consensus-building, problem solving, collaboration, event planning, budgeting, and communication. I have been an active volunteer in the community: I have been a Girl Scout volunteer since 2007 both leading troops and taking roles to plan and coordinate weekend camp programs and the cookie program for all the troops in our area. I have volunteered to support local youth athletic programs since my kids were in t-ball, and I volunteer regularly at my church and at the food bank. I have been an appointed member of the Mill Creek Park and Recreation Board since 2021 and have served as the chair since 2022. I have attended City Council meetings and events since 2023 and know the issues and decisions that face us as a city: I am ready to serve on day one.
  • Managing population growth will be a key issue in Mill Creek in the coming years and decades. The Puget Sound region is expected to grow by one million people in the next twenty years: Mill Creek was required to show capacity for growth by 3,500 people in that timeframe. It is important that as the population grows, we work together to maintain the things that make us love our city: green space and a sense of community. We are a beautiful city that will continue to be attractive for people to move to as long as we do what it takes to thrive. As we grow, we need to maintain our strong park system, keep the tree canopy, and strengthen our commitment to working with civic groups and offering city events and programs to keep people connected.
  • Providing places for the community to gather and build a sense of belonging is very important. In the development of the South Town Center area, I want to see an outdoor public park as well as a public indoor gathering space. I strongly support the creation of a community center on the city-owned DRCC properties. This space should be a multi-use facility with rooms available to rent for meetings or events, performance space, and recreation space. The project to enhance the playground and the Veterans Monument at Library Park should be completed. And I support the city taking ownership of the Penny Creek Natural Area and working with community groups to keep it maintained as a natural resource for us all.
  • The city is currently operating at an operational deficit. Work needs to be done to increase revenue and to work with partners to find sources of grant funding and cooperative ventures. The city is already running with a lean staff and has significant deferred maintenance which cannot be deferred further into the future. Additionally, the City faces rising costs for several things which are non-negotiable, including insurance, jail costs, and benefits packages for staff. Attracting new businesses to the city will increase the sales tax collected. Population growth can mean that the property tax burden can be shared across more people. These are complex problems and require complex solutions: if the solutions were simple it would be done!
I am particularly passionate about community engagement and transparency in government. It is important that residents have real opportunities to make their voices heard and that there is clear communication from the City to residents about issues in the community and decisions that are being made. I propose a review of the City’s communication plans and the adoption of some kind of city newsletter. I also propose that the city provide more opportunities for residents to attend public meetings and informational sessions at different times of the day and days of the week: for example, I would support events like the city chat be held occasionally on the weekends and move to different weekdays to make attendance easier for residents.
Honesty and integrity, willingness to learn new things and to listen to differing opinions, and a commitment to do what is right for the community not for personal gain.
The core responsibilities are to be present at meetings and community events, to prepare for discussion by reading the agenda and associated materials ahead of time, and seeking input from residents along the way in order to stay informed about their needs.
I would like to leave a legacy of service: I want to leave the community better than I found it. I want the people I interact with to know that they matter and that we are building something good together.
The first major historical event that I remember was the Challenger disaster in 1986: I was 9 years old.
My first job was as a babysitter when I was a teenager, but my first "real" job was as a warehouse checker at a cold storage warehouse. I worked there for four summers when I was in college.
I can't narrow it down to one book, but I can narrow it down to two series, both of which I have read multiple times: The Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings. Both stories captured my imagination as a child and continue to make me think as an adult and to inspire me. They remind me that there is good in the world worth fighting for and that it is our job to work together for the greater good.
The experience needed is attention to local issues, involvement in the community, and collaboration with others; it doesn't need to be in an official capacity in government or politics.
Snohomish County Democrats, 44th LD Democrats, Senator John Lovick, Representative April Berg, Representative Brandy Donaghy, County Councilmember Jared Mead, Mayor Brian Holtzclaw, Mayor Pro Tem Stephanie Vignal, City Councilmembers Melissa Duque and Sean Paddock
