I am a single mother raising a 9-year-old Black boy, navigating daily decisions to ensure his safety and imparting life lessons in a country that poses challenges. Growing up in Los Angeles with working-class parents and five siblings, I witnessed their struggles to provide a comfortable life. Despite going to college for a better future, the promised economic empowerment didn't materialize upon my return. My experience is reflective of many Californians facing economic disparities. I am deeply concerned about systemic issues, particularly the targeting of Black males in the war on drugs and stop-and-frisk policies. Witnessing family members from the inner city memorialized with different names and faces on T-shirts underscores the urgent need for change. The vulnerable communities, affected by the prison industrial complex, economic lockout, housing discrimination, and historical disadvantages, require comprehensive efforts to address these persistent challenges. My journey motivates my commitment to advocating for equity and justice for those who have been marginalized and disadvantaged.
  • Housing Justice: - Advocate for policies combating housing discrimination and promoting affordable housing initiatives. - Support community-driven efforts to address the legacy of redlining and ensure fair access to housing opportunities.
  • Reparations: - campaign issue centered on rectifying historical injustices and systemic inequalities faced by marginalized communities, with a primary focus on African Americans. This movement aims to acknowledge and address the enduring impacts of slavery, segregation, and discriminatory policies that have disproportionately affected Black individuals and their descendants. Advocates argue that a comprehensive reparations program is vital for achieving genuine equality and justice.
  • Improving Public Safety- for the betterment and safety of the community.
Housing Affordability:

Addressing the housing crisis is a top concern. Californians are passionate about finding solutions to make housing more affordable, combating homelessness, and ensuring access to safe and stable living conditions.

Reparations:
To promote social and racial justice is a key passion of mine. Californians advocates for policies that address systemic racism, promote equity, and ensure that all residents are treated fairly and inclusively.

Criminal Justice Reform:
Advocate for criminal justice reform, police accountability, and efforts to address systemic issues within the criminal justice system garner passionate support. Californians strive for fairness, equity, and justice in law enforcement and the legal system.

Economic Equality:

Economic issues, including income inequality, workers' rights, and support for small businesses, are areas of concern for me as well. Californians are passionate about policies that create a more equitable economic landscape.
I draw inspiration from Malcolm X, who fearlessly spoke truth to power, prioritizing honesty over the comfort of the establishment. I believe that being forthright is crucial for meeting the genuine needs of the people. Additionally, I admire Dr. King for his extraordinary use of nonviolence during a tumultuous era, effectively amplifying the voices and needs of his community. Ella Baker and Bayard Rustin, with their adept organizational skills, impress me with their ability to educate and mobilize people around specific principles and causes, even in the face of constant danger. These figures serve as role models for their unwavering commitment to justice and their impactful methods of advocating for the well-being of their communities.
The initial historical event I witnessed in my lifetime was the death of Tyiesha Miller in Riverside, CA. Tyiesha, a young girl, was tragically shot and killed by Riverside PD while she was asleep in her car. As I observed the media coverage, it was disturbing to learn about police officers shaving their heads, seemingly to provoke and instigate tensions, creating an unsettling parallel with the imagery associated with the Klan. This incident left a lasting impression on me and raised concerns about police conduct and the need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement.
I began my career as a Paralegal specializing in cases related to excessive force, and I dedicated five years to this role.
The ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature is characterized by open communication, collaboration, and a shared commitment to public service. Key elements include transparent communication, collaborative decision-making, respect for the separation of powers, negotiation, and compromise. Both parties should be adaptable to changing circumstances, prioritize the public interest, and ensure effective legislative processes. Accountability, oversight, and a commitment to streamlined governance contribute to a positive and functional relationship. In summary, an ideal relationship involves a cooperative and goal-oriented partnership focused on advancing the welfare of the state and its residents.
Over the next decade, California faces several pressing challenges. These include addressing homelessness, ensuring affordable housing, advocating for reparations, promoting education equity, regulating the housing market to shield residents from manufactured inflation caused by foreign investors, and enhancing public safety. These multifaceted issues demand comprehensive and strategic approaches to create positive and lasting impacts on the well-being of the state's residents.
Want to hear a dirty joke? Horse fell in the mud.
Legislative oversight promotes accountability and transparency. If the legislature has a role in overseeing emergency powers, it ensures that decisions are made in the public interest and align with democratic principles. Consideration should be given to the duration and scope of emergency powers. Temporary and well-defined powers should/could be granted during specific crises, with legislative oversight ensuring that these powers are not prolonged or expanded without justification.
I hold the view that compromise in policymaking can result in diluted policies that fail to address core issues. I believe in maintaining principled positions and avoiding concessions that diminish the intended impact of policies. While I am open to participating in the exchange of ideas and supporting bills that meet the needs of specific communities, my willingness to compromise is grounded in ensuring a fair give-and-take rather than undermining the interests of any particular community.
