Just under 7 years ago, Tecle came to the United States from Ethiopia with nothing but a couple pairs of shoes (one for running, the other a pair of soccer cleats) to his name. Today - after learning English, working multiple jobs, earning a GED, and attending both the College of Western Idaho and Boise State University - Tecle is proud to be a homeowner in West Boise. He is passionate about public service and volunteers tirelessly in the community to make this a safer, more welcoming city for all.

He is currently nearing completion of a B.S. in Political Science at BSU and serves as a Petroleum Supply Specialist in the United States Army Reserves. He is trilingual, and taught himself English with a friend while living in a refugee camp.

Tecle previously attended CWI, worked at the English Language Center as computer lab monitor and cultural orientation facilitator, volunteered for local political campaigns during the 2018 election and served as an intern at the Idaho House of Representatives for the 2019 legislative session.

Tecle is a nationally accredited language service provider and a head soccer coach for high school students at Nations United under Rush Sports Complex Idaho. He was awarded the "Refugee Success and Integration Award" by the Conference on Idaho Office for Refugees at Boise State University in 2014.

Tecle's hobbies include running, reading, and writing poetry. Running through the trails of Boise's foothills is a favorite pastime that calls to mind the Ethiopian hills of his childhood.
  • As a young working person and student, as a New American, as a person who lives in and commutes from West Boise every day: I have perspectives and insights that would be valuable at City Hall.
  • My priorities are affordable housing, public transit, and public safety.
  • I intend to be an accessible and welcoming voice on the City Council, and I look forward to working with all our community leaders and partners.
As a New American, millennial, student, and servicemember, I know of many people who are struggling. My top three priorities are:

Affordable housing: It's crucial that we bring people together from all neighborhoods in our city, as the people most affected by the affordable housing crisis are oftentimes the ones with the least access to policymakers. I would support continued efforts by the city to grow our housing and push for more.

Transportation: Our issues with transit are big and complex, and our traffic worsens every year. As we work towards a regional plan, I would push for continued investment in bus access. The communities who depend on busses - refugees included - need to be able to get to jobs, school, and services in a timely way. New technologies and a campaign for increased usage would help this effort.

Public Safety: Though our crime rates are low and Boise is generally a safe city, we must ensure that it will continue while extending safety to marginalized communities and neighborhoods who have been left out by agencies and partners. I will work to build partnerships with every community, developing crime prevention education with a community focus.
