After spending my career in public service and education, I’m ready to serve East Anchorage and fight for education, jobs, and public safety.

I recently retired from a 6+ year career as a planner with the Mat-Su Borough. I focused on the efficient use of land and resources and worked closely with the public and policy makers to design plans for land use that helped communities meet their goals.

An educator for most of my career, I care deeply about increasing education funding and creating opportunities for our students. I spent 25 years teaching middle school science and earned a degree in natural resources science.

I grew up in rural America where I learned the value of hard work, community, and giving back. If elected, I will bring that same can-do attitude to Juneau, and will work hard to create rational and effective government for the people of Northeast Anchorage.
  • I believe that the best representation comes when candidates engage with voters directly. In my 2022 campaign I knocked on over 3,500 doors in my district to talk to my neighbors in HD22. In 2024 I am on track to door knock on almost twice that number. Talking to voters at their doors lets me know what's on their mind and informs my candidacy on how to best represent them. Related, I try to complete questionnaires so voters know who I am and what I can offer as a candidate. I talk to everyone and can almost always find a connection because I listen. We are all more alike than we are different. Too many politicians seem to avoid voters and sow division. I'm ready to work across the aisle to proudly represent my neighbors in HD-22.
  • I love my community in East Anchorage and I think I can be of service. I think at a time when our education system is in crisis, my perspective of 25+ years of teaching in public schools will be of use.
  • The voters during my door knocks aren't asking for much, but they do want representative government that works for them. They are telling me that their priorities are this: 1. Increase education funding and stop politicizing the education of our kids. 2. Develop solutions for the housing affordability crisis and homelessness. 3. Improve public services such as road maintenance and snow plowing.
I'm most passionate about these areas:

1. Education (I'm a former teacher). Education not only provides the springboard to a better future, but are schools are integral to our community.
2. Infrastructure, both physical and human. We need to build and maintain Alaska, especially to improve our energy infrastructure to address the impending natural gas delivery shortage south central Alaska is facing.
3. Public safety - people want to feel safe and that emergency services are adequately staffed and can respond in a timely manner when needed.
4. Natural resources. As a fisheries and wildlife biologist I have a deep appreciation of how Alaskans value and use their natural resources.

5. Affordable housing and child care options.
1. You must listen closely to others, whether constituent contacts, public testimony, or Alaskans at large.

2. You should be able to find common ground with others and be willing to compromise.
3. You need to be able to process information efficiently, anticipate consequences of your votes, and ask good questions.
4. You should strive to work across the aisle to get things done.
5. You should strive to represent your district and what is best for your neighbors.

6. Put people before party.
Provide leadership that results in competent services for HD-22 based on the needs of your district residents. Don't play political games, but instead get work done for, by, and of the people.
My father died unexpectedly when I was just six years old. That was emotionally and financially challenging for us as a family. However, we had good neighbors in our rural Iowa community who helped us, and I had excellent public school teachers that gave me a good education and a love for learning. When I was 12 years old my mother remarried a union guy who had a good UAW job and my family was able to join the middle class. To this day I appreciate the positive impacts that education and union employment brought to my life.
Although separate branches of government, the Executive and the Legislative branches should communicate closely and often to better do the people's work. After all, politics is "the art of the possible."
We need to spend less time on divisive issues and more time on the bread and butter issues that most Alaskans care about.

1. Stabilize and inflation-proof education funding so our schools can focus on education.
2. Address the many public employee vacancies impacting the services Alaskans expect by offering a defined benefit pension to better attract and retain the best employees.
3. To develop fiscal planning that stabilizes finances and protects the Permanent Fund.

4. Dealing with the housing and childcare crises.
Yes. As an educator I learned that the best education happens when there is a positive relationship between the teacher and the students. Likewise, as a legislator it is key to build relationships with ALL of your colleagues to create better understanding, respect, and policy.
I most admire and respect State Senator Bill Wielechowski. He is an effective legislator who works across the aisle, listens, and always represents east Anchorage well. He engages his constituents with community surveys, forums, and door knocks.
There are many, the result of knocking thousands of doors. I have funny stories, sad stories, dog stories, weird things I've seen stories, and "wow-isn't that cool" stories. Rather than pick a specific story I'll just summarize that my neighbors in east Anchorage work hard and don't ask for much, but they do want their representatives to engage with them and listen to them. Life here often isn't easy in one way or another, and I have worked hard to listen to their stories, their concerns. To be a good representative you have to "walk a mile" in neighbors' shoes. That's why I have been knocking thousands of doors in HD22.
I have been honored to receive the endorsement os several employee unions, and these are listed on my website. I'm proud for the support of working people who have built the physical and human infrastructure that makes Alaska a great place to live.
I have also been endorsed by Senator Bill Wielechowski who represents my east Anchorage senate district well.
1. Education.

2. Resources.
3. Judiciary.
4. Labor & Commerce.

5. Rules.
We need to be transparent about what we do, and how we are funded. The public process as outlined in the Alaska Open Meetings Law is key to building confidence in the workings of government.

Dear friends and neighbors,

I’m running to represent the citizens of northeast Anchorage in the Alaska State House. Let me introduce myself.

I’m proud to be an Alaskan. I grew up with a commitment to serve others, and I hope to continue that service as your next representative. I earned a degree in natural resources science and spent 25 years teaching middle school science. I currently work as a Planner with the Mat-Su Borough. I’ll fight for Northeast Anchorage in Juneau as your representative to the Alaska House for new House District 22.

When not working, I enjoy hiking, hunting, fishing, running, biking, paddling, skiing, gardening, and spending time with my wife. I’m a devoted dog owner and enjoy training and hunting my Labradors.

I grew up in the countryside where I learned the value of hard work and helping my neighbors. I will bring that same attitude to Juneau.

I have given my life to public service doing meaningful work. I would like to continue this work on your behalf. I humbly ask your support for rational and effective government. Thank you.
  • • Ensure a quality education for Alaskans: As a long-time educator I know the education of our youth is key to our state’s long-term success. I will support an education system for Alaska that attracts and retains the best teachers and curricula that prepares our kids for a bright future.
  • • Support working families: Working families are the backbone of Alaska. We are experiencing a childcare and affordable housing crisis, and I will work to reduce barriers for working people wanting to live, work, play, and retire in Alaska.
  • • Maintain and grow critical infrastructure: Alaska is a wonderful place to live, but our communities need high-quality, well-maintained infrastructure to prosper. I support strong state investments in maintaining and growing critical infrastructure such as roads, ports, and airports in addition to broadband and energy infrastructure
• Strengthen our economy: Alaska’s economy centers on natural resource development, tourism, and fisheries. By further diversifying our economy, we can strengthen and enhance it. Northeast Anchorage has a vibrant small business community, and I will support these job creators. I support a consistent and robust PFD.
Ultimately, I am guided by the overarching philosophy that government should act in ways that helps people want to live/work/play here, raise families here, and to stay here in their retirement.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Alaska

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
