Three seats on the Tempe Elementary School District Governing Board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbent Jim Lemmon and Melanie Beikman's seats were up for election, but Beikman did not file to run for re-election by the general election filing deadline. Lemmon faced Patrick Morales and Harvey Gibson in the race for the at-large seats.[1] Lemmon retained his seat in the general election, while Morales won his first term on the board.

In addition to the two four-year terms, a two-year term was also up for election following the death of board member Kathy Espinoza on July 10, 2014. The only candidate for this position was Evan D. Rogers, a write-in candidate. Because no other write-in candidates filed for the race, the election for that seat was canceled. Rogers was appointed to the governing board by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on September 10, 2014.

Voter and candidate information

The Tempe Elementary School District Governing Board is composed of five at-large, nonpartisan members who are elected to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was November 4, 2014. Arizona law required an automatic recount in the case of a tie. If a tie held, the winner would have been chosen by drawing lots in the presence of the candidates. There were no runoff elections. Members-elect for four-year terms assumed their board memberships on January 1, 2015, while the winner of the two-year term assumed the office as soon as the canvass of votes was completed.[5]

Candidates were required to submit nominating petitions signed by qualified electors totaling 0.5 percent of the total voter registration in the school district to the county school superintendent between July 7, 2014, and August 6, 2014.[5] For the 2014 general election, the number of required signatures was 344. The deadline for write-in candidates to file was September 25, 2014.[6]

Voters were required to register by October 6, 2014, in order to vote in the general election. Early voting began October 9, 2014.[7]
