Tennessee Supreme Court gets new chief justice
August 31, 2012
Tennessee: Tomorrow Justice Gary R. Wade will become the 29th chief justice to serve the Tennessee Supreme Court since it's formation in 1870. Wade will take over as head of the state's judiciary from Justice Cornelia Clark, who became chief justice two years ago.[1]
Justice Wade has served on the court since appointment by Governor Phil Bredesen in 2006. Prior to joining the court, he served on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals for 19 years. From 1998 to 2006, Wade was the presiding judge of the court.[2]
In a press release, Justice Wade said:
| “ | During my tenure on the Supreme Court, we have been blessed with excellent leadership...so I have big shoes to fill. But, the role of chief is merely that of first among equals, and with a talented, dedicated and veteran court, now made up of former Chief Justice Holder, current Chief Justice Clark, and Justices William Koch and Sharon Lee, the future of the state judiciary is in good hands.[3][4] | ” |
Tennessee is one of 21 states that elects its chief justice through a vote of peers on the high court.[5]
