Terrence Holmes

Terrence L. Holmes is a judge for the Jefferson County Court in Texas.[1] The general election took place on November 8, 2016. Holmes won election in 2016.
Holmes ran for election to the Jefferson County Court at Law in 2014.[2] At the time of the election, he was also serving as a judge of the Beaumont Municipal Court, a position he had held since 2009.[3]
Education
Holmes earned a B.S. from Southern University (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) in 1980. He later earned an M.S. from Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View, Texas) in 1982 and a J.D. from Texas Southern University (Houston, Texas) in 1990.[3]

Holmes is also an ordained minister and serves as an associate minister at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Beaumont.[3]
Elections
2016
Texas held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on March 1, 2016. A primary runoff election was held on May 24, 2016, for any seat where the top vote recipient did not receive a majority of the primary vote.[4] Terrence Holmes defeated Jesse Branick in the Jefferson County Court at Law Democratic primary for Number 2.[1]

Selection method

Judges of the county courts are elected in partisan elections by the county they serve and serve four-year terms, with vacancies filled by a vote of the county commissioners.[5]
Qualifications
To serve on a county court, a judge must:[5]
- be at least 25 years old;
- be a resident of his or her respective county for at least two years; and
- have practiced law or served as a judge for at least four years preceding the election.
2014

Holmes ran for election to the Jefferson County Court at Law.
Primary: He was successful in the Democratic primary on March 4, 2014, receiving 36.9 percent of the vote. He competed against Jimmy D. Hamm and Audwin Samuel.
Runoff: Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, Holmes faced Samuel in a runoff election on May 27, 2014. He won, earning 61.3 percent of the vote.
General: He faced Clint M. Woods in the general election on November 4, 2014.
