An effort in Park Ridge, New Jersey, to recall Mayor Terry Maguire from his position was initiated in March 2017. The Committee to Recall Terry Maguire submitted a petition to the borough clerk on March 8, 2017.[1] Maguire resigned from office on April 14, 2017, which ended the recall effort.[2]
Recall supporters
George Hickman, Dawn McPartland, and Pietro Gaglioti formed the recall committee to seek Maguire's removal due to concerns about the city's efforts to increase affordable housing availability. The petition suggested that Maguire was not transparent about negotiations with Hornrock Properties, which pushed for rezoning of commercial space on 1 Sony Drive to create a 700-unit housing complex. In 2015, Hornrock and the New Jersey Fair Housing Council initiated a lawsuit against Park Ridge to require the city to provide 450 new units that meet affordable housing requirements.[3]

Maguire's official response to the recall petition said, "Each statement made by the individuals filing the petition is either blatantly false or intentionally misleading." He also argued that city officials discussed housing options in a transparent manner.[4]

The borough clerk would have needed to approve a recall petition before signatures were gathered by organizers. If approved for circulation, organizers would have required approximately 1,600 signatures from city residents within 160 days of petition approval to force a special election.[1]
