Candidate Connection

Terry Roy participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on September 25, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Terry Roy's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Support legislation to make NH more attractive to business.

Oppose any effort to create new taxes or fees.

Defend the 2nd Amendment rights of NH citizens.[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Election integrity. Right or left, rich or poor, we are all equal in the voting booth. Allowing that vote to be canceled by ineligible voters is both a tragedy and a crime.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Terry Roy answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I look up our founding fathers who risked their lives and stood up to the greatest empire the world had ever seen in a quest for freedom. I would only hope to be so brave. Every liberty they and all that followed died to give us is precious and should never be surrendered.[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
I would encourage reading the Federalist papers; Liberty and Tyrrany by Mark Levin and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee among others.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Loyalty to the Constitution above party and to have no agenda but that of your constituents.[4]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I will never betray the oath I took as a soldier in the U.S. Army to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies; foreign or domestic. I will approach the New Hampshire Constitution with the same deference.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To set aside personal aspirations and represent the will of the people who elected you.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to leave a legacy of service to country above self and fidelity to the Constitutions of New Hampshire and the United States.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The Vietnam War. I was 4 when my father returned after serving two tours as a Green Barrett.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I joined the United Sates Army at the age of 17.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas. It used to be the one time of the year when everyone put aside their differences.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Hobbit. It is a wonderful story of adventure and teaches that even the smallest among us can make a difference in great affairs by holding fast to our principles.[4]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Superman...Truth, Justice and the American Way[4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My grandparent’s bible. It reminds me of a simpler time when we knew the answer to all worries were written on its pages.[4]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Fortunate son.[4]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Due to injuries I suffered in the military, I have limited endurance and constant pain during the years of my life that I’d hoped to enjoy more.[4]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
The vast difference between the numbers of people serving in the house and senate make the house the more deliberative of the two bodies.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No and neither did I founding fathers.[4]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
In order for New a Hampshire to continue to live up to its motto it must continue to stand as a lighthouse island of freedom in a sea of socialism. It must stop refugees from Massachusetts from turning New Hampshire into a clone of the state they just left.[4]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
I believe that the executive branch should stay within its constitutional limits and the legislature should do likewise. To often we see the branches abrogating responsibility to each other in the interest of expediency. We have three branches for a reason and a governor and legislature of the same party should never rubber stamp each other in the interest of party politics.[4]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
I believe that civility is the foundation of understanding but I will never compromise my values for the sake of working across the aisle.[4]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
N/A[4]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Veterans interests, Criminal Justice[4]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
Not at the moment. I prefer to serve at the pleasure of the people and to return to peaceful obscurity.[4]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in New Hampshire

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of New Hampshire scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
