An effort to recall Terry Slatic from his position as the District 7 representative on the Fresno Unified School District Board of Education in California did not go to a vote in 2020. Recall supporters did not submit the necessary 7,338 signatures from registered voters in District 7 by the filing deadline on May 12, 2020.[1]
The recall effort started in October 2019 after a number of complaints were made about Slatic's behavior. The complaints included aggressive behavior toward an Army recruiter, threatening to kick students off of the cheerleading squad at Bullard High School, and demanding wrestling coaches of two high schools stop holding joint wrestling practice, according to The Fresno Bee.[2] Slatic said he represented his district to the best of his ability.[3]
Slatic was elected to a four-year term on the board on November 6, 2018. He defeated three opponents with 34.2% of the vote.[4]
Recall supporters
Stacy Williams, a member of the recall effort, said, "It is just a safety issue and we say, we really need to get him off that board."[3]
Slatic was censured by the board in a 6-0 vote in August 2020. The censure came after investigations into multiple incidents at Bullard High School concluded that Slatic violated board policies, failed to govern responsibly, and blurred the distinction between his role as a board member and that of a staff member. The censure vote removed him from leadership positions and committee roles until he took anger management classes. It also prohibited him from attending staff meetings and required him to notify administrators before visiting a school and to take a chaperone on school visits.[2]
Recall opponents
Slatic told ABC 30 Action News that he represented his district to the best of his ability. "I serve at the pleasure of the people in northwest Fresno. It is that simple. When they tell me to stop, I'll stop," Slatic said.[3]
In reaction to the board's censure vote, Slatic said he had done nothing illegal and had not violated board policies. He said he was not willing to take anger management classes as only a judge could require him to do that. Slatic also said that the board's censure vote was disenfranchising his constituents. “Every trustee should be handled and treated the exact same way and should not have any restrictions that impact their constituents in any way,” Slatic said.[2]
