Texas Governor appoints first Latina woman to Supreme Court
October 8, 2009
Texas: Republican Governor Rick Perry appointed the first Hispanic female to the Texas Supreme Court today. Eva Guzman will take over the seat vacated in September of 2009 by Scott Brister. "I am honored by this appointment and am grateful for the confidence Governor Perry has shown in me. It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of this region over the last decade, and I look forward to serving all Texas citizens as a justice on the Texas Supreme Court," said Guzman.[1]
Guzman has served on the Texas Fourteenth District Court of Appeals since 2002, when she took her seat after being appointed by Governor Perry. She retained her seat in 2002 and 2004 in retention elections.[2] Prior to her service on the Court of Appeals, Guzman was a Family Court judge in Harris County. She was appointed to that judgeship by former Governor George Bush.[3]
Judge Guzman has been the recipient of many awards, including Latina Judge of the Year (2009) from the Hispanic National Bar Association, Judge of the Year (2009) from the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas Foundation, and Appellate Judge of the Year by P.O.L.I.C.E. Inc. and the Houston Police Officers Union.[1]
