Texas state legislative special elections, 2012
One special election for the Texas General Assembly took place in 2012. This election was called to fill a vacancy in the Texas House of Representatives, District 41.
How vacancies are filled
If there is a vacancy in the Texas State Legislature, the governor must call a special election to fill the vacant seat.[1] A governor's proclamation to hold a special election must be delivered to county judges in the legislative district no later than 36 days before the scheduled election.[2]
The secretary of state can declare a candidate duly elected in a special election if there is no opposition.[3]

Veronica Gonzales (D) resigned her seat on June 29 to become vice president for university advancement at the University of Texas-Pan American.[4] Gov. Rick Perry (R) scheduled the special election for November 6, the same day as the general election. The winner would fill out the remainder of Gonzales' term. Candidates had until August 23 to file.[5] Democrat Bobby Guerra was the only candidate to file and so the Texas Secretary of State's office declared him the winner and called off the election.[6] |
