Republicans have secured 50 seats in the next U.S. Senate compared to 48 seats for Democrats (including two independents who caucus with them). Control of the next Senate will come down to Georgia's runoff elections. In The Runoff Report, we provide the latest on each runoff and the fight for Senate control.

Regular Election Updates

David Perdue released an ad Saturday. In it, he said, "I never wanted to be in politics. But six years ago, our economy was a mess. I thought my background turning around Reebok and Dollar General might help. You agreed. We built the greatest economic turnaround in U.S. history. Record jobs. Then came COVID. We'll beat this virus, get our lives back to normal, and come back even stronger. America always does." 

Jon Ossoff campaigned at three small businesses in southwest Atlanta on Saturday. Sunday, he released an ad featuring a restaurant owner discussing how the pandemic affected her business. She said of Perdue, "When we needed him the most, he fought against the stimulus checks and to cut unemployment insurance."

This election is for a full six-year term ending January 2027. Perdue was first elected in 2014. Ossoff ran against Karen Handel (R) in the 6th Congressional District special election in 2017.

Special Election Updates

---

Kelly Loeffler campaigned with U.S. Rep. Doug Collins (R) Saturday at a gun range in Jasper. Collins finished third in the Nov. 3 special election, receiving 20% of the vote to Loeffler's 26% and Warnock's 33%. 

Raphael Warnock spoke at a community outreach event at Ebenezer Baptist Church Saturday. 

The special election will fill the remainder of the term Johnny Isakson (R) won in 2016. He resigned in Dec. 2019, and Gov. Brian Kemp (R) appointed Loeffler, co-owner of the WNBA team Atlanta Dream. Warnock is senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church. The winner will complete the term ending in January 2023.

• Stacey Abrams, 2018 Democratic gubernatorial candidate, began hosting weekly briefings with entertainment executives, managers, and agents on how they can boost the Democratic Senate campaigns Friday.
   
• Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, held a meet-and-greet in Marietta Saturday, where she urged Republican voters to turn out for the runoffs.

 

 

 

 

Today: Influencer spotlight

Senate Georgia Battleground Fund is a joint fundraising committee between Loeffler, Perdue, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).

Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to President George W. Bush, serves as the committee's national finance chairman. The NRSC said the "presidential level fundraising operation features a leadership team of state chairs from nearly all 50 states and a team of national and honorary co-chairs."

Senate Georgia Battleground Fund released an ad featuring a voiceover by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R). He says, "If Democrats win the two runoff elections in Georgia, Republicans lose control of the Senate. This means radical liberal policies like the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and defunding our police could become reality."

The committee filed a statement of organization with the Federal Election Commission on Jan. 30, 2020. The NRSC announced the committee's leadership team on Nov. 19.
