Judgement day is here not just for politicians, but for 146 ballot statewide measures across 41 states and a number of notable local ballot measures. Voting on ballot measures is a unique opportunity for Americans, who are given the privilege of direct democracy and the ability to reject or cement proposals into law.

Today's vote isn't only about certain proposals, but the momentum behind those proposals. Marijuana legalization, for example, is on the ballot in three states, the District of Columbia and multiple local ballots. Activists are already planning several initiatives for 2016, but a setback at the ballot box could force them to rework their tactics and reevaluate their goals.
