Campaign themes

2016

Abed's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

  • Education: We need equitable funding for our schools. Schools, which are at the heart of a community, are continuing to close, class sizes are increasing and resources are being cut. We must stop lawmakers from balancing the budget on the backs of schools.
  • Seniors: I will continue fighting to see that the Legislature always acts to improve the quality of life for Michigan’s senior citizens.
  • Protecting our middle class families: I have fought hard to repeal the changes in our tax code that have hurt middle-class families. While as State Representative, I introduced or cosponsored repeal of the senior retirement tax, restoration of the Homestead property tax credit and the EITC Tax credit among others.
  • Veterans: Introduced Family Military Leave Act which would ensure that service members could enjoy time with their spouses when they are on leave without having to worry that their spouse might lose his or her job.
  • Jobs: I will continue to take a stand against awarding of contracts or tax breaks to businesses that hire out of state workers or outsource good paying jobs, and diversify the economy by re-investing in agriculture, the service sector and new energy technology as well as manufacturing jobs.[2]
