My name is Terri Tauro, and I am running for State Representative because I am passionate about supporting the people of the Eighth district, a placeI have called home my whole life. I live here. I work here. I have raised my children here. Moreover, I am a union organizer, and the president of my union: the Marblehead Municipal Employee's Union. As union president, I have witnessed firsthand attempts to pay workers less than they are worth and the dangerous working conditions that employers can put their employees into. I want to be a voice for change, and I am running to support all the people who call my district home. I am running on fully funding our schools, supporting the creation of good paying jobs in the green energy sector to combat the climate crisis, and protecting the right of all workers to form and join a union.
  • As a mother of two, I know how vital fully funded schools are to our children's wellbeing and future. I am running on fully funding our schools to make sure our educational workers have the support they need to support our children in turn.
  • As a fully coastal community, the Eighth Essex District faces great potential losses in the face of the rising tides of the climate crisis. I believe we need to bring well paying, union jobs in the green energy sector so that we can rid ourselves of the dependency on fossil fuels that endanger our world while also uplifting the working people of Lynn, Marblehead, and Swampscott.
  • In 2021, women in Massachusetts made, on average, 19% less than their male counterparts. I believe in equal pay for equal work, and I want to pass legislation that ensures that all workers, regardless of race, gender identity, or sexuality, receive a paycheck that reflects the full value of their work.
I am passionate about the public policy issues surrounding education, the environment, healthcare, and workers' rights. I believe we need to fully fund our schools, transition to green energy to combat the climate crisis, ensure healthcare for all, and protect workers' rights to organize and receive a living wage.
Transparency and accountable are vital to the role of State Representative. I believe that voters must know where their representatives stand and that representatives must always strive to accurately REPRESENT the wants and needs of the people of their district. If I am elected, I will be sent to Beacon Hill to serve the voters' interests, not my own, and I will always push for the changes that they want to see. This is why I have signed Act on Mass' "Voters Deserve to Know" Pledge. As a signer, I vowed to make all committee votes and testimony publicly available, thus ensuring that voters will know where I stand on the issues. A democracy is only as strong as it is answerable to the will of the people, and the will of the people can only be enforced when representatives are transparent and accountable.
I would like my legacy to be that I was part of a worker-first transition to green energy. The climate crisis is the threat of our time. When I look back on my life, I would like to be able to say that I helped with the transition from fossil fuels while also ensuring that working people were lifted up by the green energy jobs we brought to our state to meet our energy needs.
My first job was at an answering service. I worked there from age 14 to 16.
Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)
It can be beneficial for stage legislators to have previous experience in government or politics, but it can also be beneficial to have a fresh pair of eyes looking at a problem. Moreover, I think it is vitally important that people with the experience of working for a living get elected to positions in government. Everyday concerns and needs must be recognized by our representatives, and this is much easier to achieve when a working person is elected to our government. We need people who know what working conditions are like and who know firsthand what it is like to deal with the increasing cost of living in our state and our country.
I never particularly saw myself getting into politics. I don't have ambitions for running for a different office than I am now. I see the opening in the legislature as a chance to do some good: to support my district and the people who call it home. I am doing this because I believe in my platform, not out of political ambition.
As the president of a union that includes a diverse coalition of workers, from librarians to highway construction workers to 911 dispatchers, I have often needed to find common ground and build consensus. As a democratically elected representative, I will be the voice of my district, and, therefore, I will represent the diversity therein. Compromises will always be needed in order to ensure that every person in my district feels represented and seen in my policymaking. I will work with my colleagues in the state legislature to build consensus and pass legislature that we all can be proud of.
