An effort to recall City Council President Theresa Westfall is underway in Peru, Nebraska.[1]
Recall supporters
According to KLZA, organizer Cindy De La Cruz cited allegations that Westfall engaged in misconduct, exceeded her authority, acted against the city of Peru’s interests, and worked with a former city employee to interfere with the elected mayor’s ability to carry out official duties as reasons for the recall.[1]
Recall opponents
According to the Nemaha Valley Observer, Westfall wrote the following in a formal defense statement to the Nemaha County Clerk:[2]

The petition’s accusations are baseless. As a council member I have utilized checks and balances to strive for fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency to protect Peru’s best interests. In fact, I will wholeheartedly support anything that betters the City of Peru. I have and will continue to work hard for and listen to the concerns of the citizens of Peru.[3] |

No specific grounds are required for recall in Nebraska.[4] The number of signatures required to put the recall on the ballot depends on the office type. A majority of offices require signatures equal to 35% of the total vote cast for that office in the last general election.[5] Petition signatures must be filed within 30 days of the filing clerk issuing the petitions.[6]
