Judge found dead in his chambers
Judge Greenwell was found dead in the courthouse on July 15, 2013, with a single gunshot wound in his head. He was found by the janitors. Investigators believe the shot was fired at 12:45pm. They expect it was suicide, but the investigation is ongoing.[2][4]
By August 13, 2013, the Neuces County authorities announced that the investigation of Greenwell's suicide was complete. They found no reason to believe that there was any criminal activity related to the situation. Sheriff Jim Kaelin said, "There was no criminal wrongdoing either on Judge Greenwell's part nor was he being coerced by any outside sources. Everything that Tom Greenwell did, Tom did of his own free will."[5]
