Campaign themes
2017
Keenan highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:
| “ | RESPECTING OUR TEACHERS
My parents taught me that our teachers deserve our respect. I have spent a great deal of my adult life in the profession of teaching and coaching our youth, we have a big opportunity today to support that profession, that has supported so many of us. Teachers deserve to be rewarded for hard work, innovation, and effectiveness in the classroom. Principals should have the flexibility to make the best choices for the unique students in their unique schools. Our children RISE when Teachers and Principals are valued, respected and have flexibility.
EMPOWERING OUR PARENTS I will work to keep our strong tradition of options and choices available to our parents so they can be empowered to make the best choice for their child. You know your child the best and you can decide what school works best for your student and family. It is my commitment to build communications with parents so they know all the options and choices they have for their students. When parents are empowered with options and choices, students RISE. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY It is my commitment to our students, parents and our Mesa County community that I will work to ensure our budget is vision focused and transparent. We must look at the core needs of our schools and fund them first, every dollar spent should first and foremost provide an excellent education for every student in Mesa County Public Schools. I have been a business owner, a teacher, a coach and a parent, in each role I have taken the responsibility of managing funding very seriously as I will continue to do as School Board Director for SD51. I will work to develop trust and communication with our parents, teachers and our Mesa County Community on budget transparency, after all it is your money, you deserve to see how it being spent to ensure the best education for our children.
CAREER READINESS I have seen first hand how a one size approach falls short for our kids. As a parent and coach I know that our children have diverse gifts and talents. I built my landscaping business that provides high school and college students an avenue to gain career readiness skills that served them in the workforce. I will continue to be an advocate for our kids as we build on MCSD51 efforts to increase options and choices for our students so they can be successful in the workforce. I will find fiscally responsible avenues for Mesa County School District to be a destination for students and parents who may be interested in nontraditional pathways, vocational skills sets, and business mentor programs within our community. I look forward to listening to parents, teachers, students and principals about what you would like to see if the future for Mesa County School District. When our district continues to open up opportunity for all kids to succeed, whether their path is college or a trade skill or business ownership, our economy thrives, our local business have the skilled works they need, Mesa County grows, and we all RISE.[7] |
