My name is Thomas Manninen. I am the Republican endorsed candidate for the Minnesota State House of Representatives race in District 3A. I am running because for far too long St. Paul has catered to Metropolitan interests only. Northern Minnesotans are forced to relinquish a huge part of their paycheck to St. Paul just to have it spent on Metropolitan projects and the St. Paul bureaucracy.
  • Open up the economy. Governor Walz shut down the entire state, putting thousands of people out of work. You should be able to provide for your family. I will be committed to fighting against a governor who treats the legislature as an obstacle, rather than a coequal branch of government.
  • Lower our taxes. Minnesota's tax structure looks like it belongs in California or New York. This has resulted in lost jobs, families living paycheck to paycheck, and a bleak economic environment. You shouldn't have to give this much money to the twin cities. I will fight to lower taxes for everyone in this district.
  • Protect our skilled workers. Here in the northland, we have a rich history of loggers, miners, truckers, and other occupations that built this country. The Twin Cities DFL has decided to side with radical environmentalists, against these great workers. I will fight for every industry that makes this district great.
Tax reform has always been something I hoped would get done for years. We are one of the few states that taxes Social Security benefits. This is wrong. While I am passionate in many different areas of public policy, the main focus for me is this: put this district's interests above the interests of the Twin Cities. In every area of public policy, this can be applied. This is the kind of legislator I will be.
I look up to my grandfather who I was blessed to know for almost 23 wonderful years. He was a man of great integrity and had a work ethic that was unrivaled. While I only knew my grandfather in his older years, his entire life embodies the American dream. I try to live in a way that would make him proud.
All politicians need to remember that government exists to protect the rights of the citizen. The founding fathers were some of the most brilliant men to have ever lived. Legislators have to be committed to protecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for every citizen of their district.
I want to be known as someone who truly cared about the well-being of his district. I want to be known as a zealous advocate for District 3A. I also hope to achieve the policy goals I have set forth.
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most iconic books of all time. Not only was it an enjoyable read, its message of justice and integrity are powerfully delivered to the reader. This book has an important message that is lost on too many people in our great country. I believe it should be read in every school and studied closely.
I have always maintained that political philosophy is more important than political experience. A legislator's job isn't complex. How they will apply their beliefs to the job is the important part.
The state legislature is a coequal branch of government. Lately, the governor has acted as if this wasn't true. Ideally, the governor and state legislature will work together to create public policy that benefit all Minnesotans. The challenge right now is for the legislature to reclaim its role as a coequal branch.
I have spoken to many business owners who fear they won't survive this unconstitutional shutdown. The governor has unilaterally shut down these businesses and many are struggling. These conversations have left me more committed to opening our economy.
