At the same time, Midanek managed the U.S. House campaign of U.S. Rep. David McKinley (R) in West Virginia. Speaking with The State Journal, Midanek described the McKinley campaign, saying, "From job-killing regulations, to Obamacare, to the War on Coal, West Virginians know that liberal Democrats in Washington do not understand the West Virginia way of life. ... David McKinley has been fighting the over regulations of the EPA, he has voted to repeal and replace Obamacare, David McKinley is fighting for West Virginia."[9]

Bill Howell 2015 Virginia House campaign

In 2015, Midanek managed Bill Howell's (R) campaign for Virginia delegate. Midanek ran a large grassroots effort during the campaign. Speaking of the strategy in October 2015, he said, "Our door knocking milestones, the #WeKnowBill campaign and endorsements from small business owners, local Realtors and local elected leaders show that we are running a strong grassroots campaign. As we move closer to Election Day, more and more voters are hearing Bill’s proven conservative record of cutting spending, defeating tax hikes and standing up against Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion."[10] Howell, who was speaker of the house at the time of the election, won with 60 percent of the votes.[11]

On July 18, 2016, the Trump campaign named Midanek the state director in the general election for Virginia.[1] In August 2016, CNN reported that Trump's state campaign relied heavily on the infrastructure put in place by the Republican National Committee. The network reported:[13]

Much as it is relying on outside groups to promote Trump on the airwaves, the real estate mogul's campaign is leaning heavily on the Republican National Committee for its get-out-the vote efforts and the group has been on the ground in the state since the beginning of 2015. They now have some 40 paid staffers working with hundreds of volunteers to connect with Republican voters -- particularly in Southwest Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley and Southside Virginia along the North Carolina border.[14]

In early September 2016, Midanek was transferred out of Virginia. Mark Kevin Lloyd became the state director, and operations for Trump in the state were handled by Mike Rubino.[2]
