A special election for the position of Virginia State Senate District 1 was called for November 8. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 21.[1]

The seat was vacant following John Miller's (D) death on April 4, 2016.[2]

Del. Monty Mason (D) defeated Thomas R. Holston (R), and John Bloom (I) in the special election.[3][4][5]
