Roseland Borough Councilman Thomas Tsilonis faced a recall effort over racist and anti-Semitic text messages that were made public in February 2017. Tsilonis and fellow councilman David Jacobs promised to resign after their text messages were reported by The Progress. Both council members resigned from their positions in the county Republican Party but remained on the council. Recall organizers ended the effort in August 2017 due to a lack of sufficient signatures.[1] Jacobs was not targeted for recall due to his recent election to the board. Recall supporters were gathering signatures as of May 10, 2017.[2]

Scott Gorman, a member of the committee seeking to recall Tsilonis, explained the recall's rationale:

A storm ripped through Roseland in February. It left this community in disarray.

In the wake of the storm, politicians took turns distancing themselves from Tsilionis and saying that he needed to step down because his conduct was indefensible. Tsilionis could have just stepped aside and left us to begin cleaning up the mess that he made. He didn’t.

That left us with two options: Either do what was necessary to have Tsilionis removed or, through our actions, say to ourselves and to the larger community that we are not sufficiently outraged to clean up the mess.[2][3]

The recall committee was created on March 31, 2017, which meant that the deadline to submit signatures was September 30, 2017. State recall law requires signature delivery within six months of a committee's creation. Supporters needed to gather at least 1,385 valid signatures from registered voters, which equaling 25 percent of the borough's 5,540 registered voters.[2]
