Campaign themes

2016

Goodman's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Restoration of Old Buildings

As a candidate, I am very strong on environmental issues. A few years ago, I changed careers from television production to metal recycling – it’s what I do. I have, personally, diverted thousands of tons of recyclable materials away from West Virginia’s waste stream, and been on site to many industrial and commercial concerns who have a vested interest in solid recycling programs. It is with that experience that I have planned two aspects of my platform.

A bill that I will focus most on passing if elected: Tax credits for renovating old, disused commercial and industrial buildings to modern occupancy and energy efficiency standards. To distill that further, if someone wants to renovate an old building to LEED standards, I believe they should be able to keep more of their own money.

Recovery for Drug Addiction

Given the scope and pervasiveness of our drug epidemic, a critical component to helping ravaged communities are the community and county health programs that are supplemented or subsidized by the state. These facilities are the front line in treatment, and more importantly prevention in our least fortunate areas.

I am committed to ensuring that these facilities have the money they need to be able to provide counseling, treatment and community outreach programs. Efforts to educate teens about the dangers of drug use are paramount – on average if a patient seeks treatment for Hepatitis C in a charitable clinic, the cost can exceed $60,000 per individual. It is much more expedient to make sure that West Virginia’s youth that are approaching bad decisions know the full risk of their actions, both physically and ethically.

Reform and Consolidated Government

Universal Tenets

  • Communities must agree in majority to undertake a new municipal corporation by vote
  • Use of existing community boundaries used to determine representation to new government
  • “City Council” style governing body composed of elected representatives, that body hires a responsible city manager, the position of “Mayor” is replaced by hired city manager
  • Communities who choose to consolidate are reasonably autonomous[2]
