Thomas Anderton Wiseman, Jr. was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. He joined the court in 1978 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter (D). He served as chief judge from 1984 to 1991. Wiseman assumed senior status on November 3, 1995. His service ended on March 18, 2020, upon his death.[1][2]

Early life and education

A native of Tennessee, Wiseman graduated from Vanderbilt University with both his bachelor's degree in 1952 and his J.D. in 1954. After graduating from law school in 1954, Wiseman served in the US Army until 1956. Wiseman graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law with his Master of Laws degree in 1990.[1]

Middle District of Tennessee

On the recommendation of Senator James Sasser, Wiseman was nominated by Jimmy Carter on August 1, 1978, to a seat vacated by Frank Gray as Gray went on senior status. Wiseman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1978 on a Senate vote and received commission on August 11, 1978. Wiseman served as the chief judge of the court from 1984 to 1991 before assuming senior status on November 3, 1995.[1] He was succeeded in this position by Todd Campbell. Judge Wiseman officially retired on October 11, 2013.
