Nebraska: In the beginning of January 2012 three Nebraskan judges will take on the new responsibilities of presiding judge.
- Judge Graten Beavers will begin presiding over the 9th Judicial District, which has jurisdiction in Buffalo and Hall Counties. Beavers has served as a county court judge since 1991.[1]
- Judge Michael Piccolo will begin presiding over the 11th Judicial District this January. Piccolo will replace Anne Paine, who was named presiding judge in 2010.[2]
- Judge John Steinheider will begin presiding over the 2nd Judicial District, which has jurisdiction in Cass, Sarpy, and Otoe Counties.[3]
As presiding judges, they will serve as liaisons for their courts and be responsible for overseeing county court services within their judicial districts. They will also have to task of overseeing personnel matters within the district and assist county courts with local district policy decisions.[3][2][1]
The process of choosing a presiding judge:
Judges within their respective districts vote for one of their fellow judges who they feel is qualified for the position and then the Nebraska Supreme Court either approves or does not approve the nomination.[3][2][1]
