Kansas: The 3rd Judicial District Nominating Commission of Kansas has nominated three attorneys to replace Judge David E. Bruns on the 3rd Judicial District Court (Shawnee County). Governor Brownback now has 30 days to appoint one of the three to the position vacated when Bruns was appointed to the Court of Appeals. The nominees are: Steven R. Ebberts, judge of the Topeka Municipal Court since 2003 and private practice lawyer since 1993; Carl William Ossmann, deputy general counsel/chief of litigation for the Kansas Department of Social Rehabilitation Services; and Fred C. Patton, a sole practitioner in Topeka who has practiced law since 2000. Once appointed, the new judge will face a retention election by voters in 2012.[1]
